Dragons of the East and West. Comparative analysis based on myths, legends and culture’s tradition.

Analiza porównawcza wizerunku smoka na podstawie mitów, legend i tradycji kultury” autorstwa Joanny Mality zestawia smoki europejskie z dalekowschodnimi, skupiając się przede wszystkim na smokach mitycznych i legendarnych.We wstępie autorka przedstawia stereotypowy wizerunek smoka, nakreśla ramy geograficzne i tłumaczy terminy „smoki Wschodu” oraz „smoki Zachodu”, a także zarysowuje kształt poszczególnych rozdziałów. Pierwszy merytoryczny rozdział stanowi wprowadzenie teoretyczne; znajduje się w nim definicja smoka, analiza etymologiczna smoczych nazw z całego świata oraz opis innych potworów, które są ze smokami blisko związane (wąż, żmij czy wiwern).W kolejnym rozdziale autorka przedstawia smoki Dalekiego Wschodu, rozpoczynając od smoków chińskich, które stały się swego rodzaju „matrycą” dla konstrukcji smoka Wschodu. Bada te oraz inne (m. in. japońskie i koreańskie) w wielu aspektach: mitologicznym, kultowym, symbolicznym, a także w wymiarze życia codziennego oraz popkultury.Trzeci rozdział poświęcony jest smokom Zachodu. Autorka opisuje je chronologicznie, rozpoczynając od starożytnego Bliskiego Wschodu, Iranu, Grecji i Rzymu, przez smoki germańskie (tu pojawia się analiza mitologii nordyckiej, anglo-saksońskiej oraz kontynentalnej mitologii germańskiej), aż do tradycji chrześcijańskiej oraz smoczych pogromców. Pojawiają się także unikatowe smoki ugrofińskie. Autorka opisuje także i wyjaśnia metamorfozę, jaką zachodnie smoki przeszły na przestrzeni wieków aż do czasów współczesnych.W kończącym prace podsumowaniu autorka przedstawia wnioski płynące z jej badań. Prezentuje różnice i podobieństwa, jakie łączą smoki Zachodu i Wschodu, jak również zarysowuje perspektywy dalszych badań smokoznawczych.

A Master of Arts dissertation, entitled “Dragons of the East and West. Comparative analysis based on myths, legends and culture’s tradition” written by Joanna Malita compares European and Far-Eastern dragons, focusing on mythical and legendary ones.In her introduction the author puts forward stereotypical image of dragon, frames geographical range and explains terms “dragons of the East”, “dragons of the West” and sketches the following chapters.First chapter focuses on theoretical introduction to the topic, including forming the definition of the dragon, etymological analysis of dragons’ names from all over the world and description of dragons’ cousins (for example, serpent, Slavic dragon – żmij and wyvern).In the next chapter author presents dragons of the Far East. She begins from Chinese dragons, which have become a sort of matrix for all Asiatic dragons. Than the author analyses Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, Vietnamese and Bhutanese dragons in various aspects: religious, cultic, symbolic, but also in everyday life and in popular culture.The third chapter is dedicated to the Western dragons. The author describes them chronologically, from ancient Middle East, Iran, Greece and Rome, through Germanic dragons (including Nordic, Anglo-Saxon and continental Germanic mythology) to the Christian tradition and dragon slayers. Finno-Ugric dragons are also mentioned. The author presents and explains the metamorphosis dragons have passed since the ancient times till nowadays.The dissertation is concluded with a short summary. The author puts forward the similarities and differences between Far-Eastern and Western dragons and presents other research perspectives concerning dragonology.
