The ethos of a knight as described in “Canterbury Tales” and “Libre del Orde de Cavallieria”

Tematem mojej pracy magisterskiej był: Etos rycerski w „Opowieściach Kanterberyjskich” i „Libre del Orde de Cavallieria”. Celem mojej pracy było określenie najważniejszych pojęć które tworzyły Etos rycerski. Koncentrowałem się na ideałach takich jak honor, szlachectwo, hojność, kurtuazja oraz innych które tworzyły stan rycerski. Praca moja składała się z trzech rozdziałów. W pierwszym opisałem cechy jakimi Chaucer obdarzył opisanego przez siebie rycerza w prologu Opowieści Kanterberyjskich. Ponadto streściłem jak pozostałem postacie pielgrzymów występujące w pracy angielskiego pisarza oceniały rycerza. Udowodniłem również że rycerz zaprezentowany przez Chaucera był postacią idealną. Drugi rozdział mojej pracy to opis „Opowieści Rycerza” znanej również jako Tesaida. Przedstawiłem w nim definicje romansu rycerskiego i wartości w nim występujących. Skoncentrowałem się również na postaci Tezeusza jako archetypowi idealnego władcy rycerza. Opisałem również turniej rycerski który był emanacją rycerskiej kultury ze szczególnym uwzględniłem hojności. Ostatni rozdział to opis rycerskiego stanu, jego zasad i funkcji społecznych w opinii Ramona Lulla.W swojej pracy opisującej kulturę rycerską ustaliłem że istniała bardzo wąską granica między światem materialnym i duchowym. Każde rycerska cecha jak hojność honor czy szlachectwo musiało wiązać się z konkretnym działaniem budującym ład i porządek społeczny. Ponadto opisałem wartości które stworzyły archetyp rycerza.

SummaryThe following thesis discusses the ethos of a knight as described in “Canterbury Tales” and “Libre del Orde de Cavallieria”. The aim of this paper is to determine the most important values which constitutes the ethos of a knight. I focus on the ideals such, as honour, nobility, generosity, courtesy and others. This thesis consists of three chapters. In chapter one, I describe features which a Chaucer’s knight possesses in the prologue of “Canterbury Tales”. Moreover, I have included the other characters’ descriptions of the Knight. I have also proved that a Chaucer’s knight is a role model. The second chapter is concerned with the description of “”The Knight’s Tale” (also known as Tesaida). I have included there a definition of a chivalric romance and its values. Also, I focus on Theseus as an archetype of a knight’s perfect lord. I also describe a knights’ tournament which used to be the emanation of chivalric culture. I concentrated specifically on generosity. The last chapter contains a depiction of the knights as s social group, their rules and their social function, as seen by Ramon Lull. In my work I describe the chivalric culture. I conclude that the used to be a very fine line between the material and the spiritual world. Every single chivalric value, like generosity, honour or nobility had to be backed up by a concrete activity that introduced law and order. Furthermore, I describe values that made up for the archetype of a knight.
