The issue of translating keywords on the basis of a German translation of the novel "Ferdydurke" by Witold Gombrowicz

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest analiza porównawcza powieści Witolda Gombrowicza pt. „Ferdydurke” oraz jej przekładu na język niemiecki. Literaturę prymarną stanowią tekst powieści w języku polskim oraz jej przekład na język niemiecki z 1960 r. autorstwa Waltera Tiela wraz z jego zrewidowaną wersją z 1983 r., przygotowaną przez Rolfa i Hilde Fieguth. Praca składa się z trzech części. Pierwsza z nich prezentuje okoliczności powstania niemieckiego przekładu powieści oraz recepcję dzieł Gombrowicza na obszarze niemieckojęzycznym. Druga część stanowi opis wybranych teorii przekładu. Trzecia natomiast przedstawia analizę przekładu ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem problemu tłumaczenia wybranych słów kluczy takich jak pupa, łydka, gęba. Zostały w niej przedstawione zarówno różnice pomiędzy tekstem powieści w języku polskim i tłumaczeniem na język niemiecki, jak i pomiędzy obiema wersjami przekładu.

The aim of this Master’s thesis is to carry out a comparative analysis of Witold Gombrowicz's 'Ferdydurke' and its German translation. The primary literature consists of the Polish text of the novel, the German translation prepared by Walter Tiel in 1960 and its revised version by Rolf und Hilde Fieguth from 1983. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first one describes the circumstances of translating the novel into German and its perception in German-speaking countries. The second part presents chosen theories of translation. In the third part, the translation is analysed and particular emphasis is placed on the issue of translating keywords. The part also presents the differences between the Polish text and its German translation as well as the differences between the two versions of the translation.

Das Ziel dieser Magisterarbeit ist eine vergleichende Analyse des Romans „Ferdydurke” Witold Gombrowiczs und seiner deutschen Übersetzung. Die Primärliteratur besteht aus dem polnischen Text des Romans sowie seiner Übertragung ins Deutsche von Walter Tiel aus dem Jahr 1960 und ihrer revidierten Version von Rolf und Hilde Fieguth aus dem Jahr 1983. Die Magisterarbeit besteht aus drei Teilen. Der erste Teil präsentiert die Umstände der Entstehung der deutschen Übertragung und die Rezeption des Gombrowiczschen Werkes im deutschsprachigen Raum. Der zweite Teil stellt die gewählten Übersetzungstheorien dar. Der dritte Teil bildet die Übersetzungsanalyse unter Berücksichtigung des Problems der Schlüsselwortwiedergabe. Es wurden Unterschiede sowohl zwischen dem polnischen Ausgangstext und der deutschen Übertragung als auch zwischen den beiden Versionen der Übersetzung festgestellt.
