South Korea is moving towards the democracy of everyday life based on citizen participation in demonstration culture. In particular, as a definitive edition of Korean social movements in the 2000s, the case of the Candlelight Revolution from 2016 to 2017 is a representative example to imply the qualitative changeableness of citizen participation in South Korea compared with the democratic and public movements in the past and its path-dependent evolution through repeated collective experience since 2000s. Therefore, this thesis aims at analyzing the evolution of citizen participation in South Korean democracy with various case studies. To this end, first, the quality of Korean democracy is examined by international researches, its brief history, and demonstration culture in the 2000s. Second, the Candlelight Revolution from 2016 to 2017 is analyzed based on its various backgrounds, process, main characteristics, and the immediate result. Lastly, current Korean society and the invigoration of citizen participation in Korean society after the Candlelight Revolution are discussed. Based on these findings, this thesis suggests that the quality of South Korean democracy is advanced to take its line, ingenious Korean democracy model based on citizen participation with the candlelight vigil, not to follow the Western democracy model.pl
