Analiza porównawcza „Opowieści Podręcznej” Margaret Atwood i jej filmowej i serialowej adaptacji

W tej pracy porównuję dwie wersje „Opowieści Podręcznej” z oryginalną powieścią Margaret Atwood oraz analizuję film z 1990r. w reżyserii Volkera Schlöndorffa i serial telewizyjny HULU z 2017r. stworzony przez Bruce'a Millera. Praca koncentruje się na różnicach między wszystkimi trzema dziełami; szczególnie na politycznym i społecznym tle fabuły. Pojawia się pytanie, dlaczego są zmiany w adaptacjach i do jakiego stopnia są one wierne oryginałowi. Praca jest podzielona na trzy rozdziały. Pierwszy rozpoczyna się krótkim streszczeniem fabuły i wyjaśnia kluczowe tematy w książce, mianowicie feminizm i sytuację polityczną Stanów Zjednoczonych w latach osiemdziesiątych. Drugi przedstawia różnice między filmową adaptacją z 1990r. a książką Margaret Atwood. Natomiast trzeci rozdział dotyczy najnowszej adaptacji z 2017r., która została porównana z książką. Teza kończy się konkluzją, że „Opowieść Podręcznej” z czasem nie traci na aktualności.

In this thesis two versions of The Handmaid's Tale are compared with the original novel by Margaret Atwood and analysed: the film from 1990 directed by Volker Schlöndorff and the HULU television series from 2017 created by Bruce Miller. The thesis focuses on the differences between all the three works; with special emphasis put on the political and social background of the story. The main questions of the thesis concern the changes in the adaptations, and the level of their fidelity to the original. Ultimately, the thesis aims to reveal that The Handmaid's Tale is still relevant and even increasingly so today. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter begins with a short summary of the plot and proceeds to explain the most evident themes in the book, namely feminism and the politics of the United States in the 1980s. The second chapter is concerned with Schlöndorff's film and explains the differences between this adaptation and Margaret Atwood's book. The third chapter is about the most recent adaptation, HULU Handmaid's Tale from 2017 and provides a comparison of this version with the book. The thesis ends with a conclusion that The Handmaid's Tale is, in fact, still relevant and relatable to people today.
