South Africa's media system and apartheid. Private media vs. public media

Praca traktuje o różnicach w sposobie pisania o ideologii jaką był apartheid w II połowie XX wieku w zależności od charakteru medium – prywatnego bądź publicznego. Składa się ona z trzech rozdziałów przedstawiających historię procesu kolonizacji, mającego bezpośredni wpływ na wykształcenie się nierówności rasowych w południowej części kontynentu; apartheidzie oraz jego wpływie na funkcjonowanie mediów oraz badań analizujących materiały dostępne w formie internetowej. Badania dotyczące apartheidu i rasizmu w przestrzeni medialnej zostały przeprowadzone na zbiorach dostępnych na stronie dwóch tytułów: SABC News i Mail&Guardian. W pracy została wykorzystana ilościowa i jakościowa analiza zawartości wyżej wymienionych tytułów. Hipoteza została ustalona na podstawie wiedzy historycznej dotyczącej systemu medialnego w czasach apartheidu. Dlatego też w pracy podjęto próbę ustalenia czy pomimo tego, że jeden z tytułów, pełniący wówczas role tuby propagandowej rasistowskiego rządu, a drugi jawnie się tej ideologii sprzeciwiający, będą pisały o apartheidzie i nierównościach rasowych w taki sam sposób, a tym samym, czy historia tytułów będzie wpływała na to jak na ten temat obecnie się pisze.

The thesis deals with the differences in the way of writing about the ideology called apartheid that existed in South Africa, during the second half of the 20th century depending on the characher of the medium – private or public. It consists of three chapters, presenting the history of the process of colonization, having a direct impact on the formation of racial inequality in the southern part of the continent; apartheid and its impact on the functioning of the media; and research analyzing materials available in the form of the Internet. Research on apartheid and racism in the media space was conducted on the collections available on the website of two titles: SABC News and Mail&Guardian. The study used quantitative and qualitative content analysis of the aforementioned titles. The hypothesis was established based on historical knowledge about the media system during the apartheid era. Therefore, the paper attempts to determine whether, despite one title acting as a propaganda machine for a racist government at the time and another openly opposing this ideology, they will write about apartheid and racial inequality in the same way, and thus whether the history of the titles will influence how the subject is written about today.
