Sources of adaptation success of Stephen King’s prose

W pracy o tytule „Źródła sukcesu adaptacyjnego prozy Stephena Kinga” przybliżono historię jednego z najpopularniejszych współczesnych pisarzy gatunku grozy. Opis biografii oraz cech charakterystycznych twórczości Kinga wykorzystany został do sprecyzowania stylu na potrzeby pracy nazwanego „kingowością”, na który składały się legendarne miejsce akcji, wątki autobiograficzne, wykorzystywanie horroru jako alegorii, budowanie atmosfery grozy oraz inspiracji twórczością m.in H. P. Lovecrafta i E. A. Poego. Scharakteryzowano również aspekty kariery Kinga, które uczyniły Go najchętniej adaptowanym żyjącym pisarzem na świecie. Za pomocą „kingowości” porównano różne stopnie wierności duchowi oryginału w adaptacjach filmowych najsłynniejszych powieści pisarza: "Lśnienie", "Carrie" oraz "To". Dodatkową perspektywę dostarczyły opisy filmów, gdzie King pełnił rolę reżysera lub scenarzysty, gdzie ukazano podejście twórcy do kina grozy, które miało na celu przede wszystkim zapewniać rozrywkę.

The thesis titled „Sources of adaptation success of Stephen King’s prose” shows a closer look at the history of one of the most popular contemporary writers of the horror genre. The description of the biography and the characteristics of King’s work was used to specify the style that for the purposes of the thesis got called „king-ness”, which consisted of the legendary setting, autobiographical themes, the use of horror as allegory, the construction of an atmosphere of terror and the inspiration of the works of, among others, H. P. Lovecraft and E. A. Poe. Aspects of King’s career that made him the most widely adapted living writer were also characterized. Using „king-ness”, the various degrees of fidelity to the spirit of the original in film adaptations of the writer’s most known novels were compared: "The Shining", "Carri"e and "It". Additional perspective was provided by descriptions of films where King served as director or screenwriter, where his approach to horror cinema was shown to be primarily aimed at providing entertainment.
