Angels in Old Polish Poetry

Bohaterem tej pracy jest anioł, jako postać literacka, prezentowana w utworach poetyckich doby staropolskiej. Głównym celem pracy było zaprezentowanie sposobów ukazywania postaci anielskich, ich funkcji oraz relacji z człowiekiem w poezji staropolskiej. Praca ta ukazuje także dialog twórców z tradycją angelologiczną i ich indywidualne podejście do postaci aniołów. Poszczególne rozdziały pracy prezentują motyw anioła w poezji kolejnych epok literackich – od średniowiecza do baroku. W rozdziale pierwszym omówione zostały narodziny myśli angelologicznej oraz starożytnej koncepcji bytów pośrednich. Przywołano w nim poglądy Klemensa Aleksandryjskiego, Pseudo-Dionizego Areopagity, Orygenesa i innych. Fragment ten opisuje także sposób funkcjonowania aniołów w Biblii i nauce Ojców Kościoła. Zaprezentowano tu również ogólne tendencje ukazywania dobrych duchów w literaturze pięknej. Rozdział drugi przedstawia postaci aniołów w epoce średniowiecza. Na początek ukazano główne wątki myśli angelologicznej tejże epoki. Zaprezentowano przekonania świętych: Bonawentury, Hildegardy z Bingen, Tomasza z Akwinu. W rozdziale tym odwołano się także do eschatologii epoki średniowiecza i miejsca aniołów w wierzeniach dotyczących życia po śmierci. Dalsze podrozdziały prezentują postać anioła w modlitwach, nabożeństwach, tekstach kazań, apokryfach, pieśniach i kolędach polskich. Szczególną uwagę w charakteryzowaniu postaci dobrych duchów zwrócono na funkcje, jakie pełnią wobec ludzi, a także sposób angelofanii.Trzeci rozdział pracy prezentuje przede wszystkim rolę aniołów w poezji Jana Kochanowskiego. Dokonano w nim analizy wybranych teksów Psalmów, Trenów i Pieśni poety z Czarnolasu. Zaprezentowano stosunek autora do postaci dobrych duchów, a także funkcje, jakie pełnią w jego twórczości. Anioł w poezji Kochanowskiego objawia się przede wszystkim jako pocieszyciel człowieka. W rozdziale tym odwołano się również do głównych koncepcji angelologicznych epoki renesansu – do poglądów świętego Ignacego Loyoli i świętej Teresy z Awila.Ostatni rozdział pracy omawia rolę aniołów w poezji barokowej, na podstawie utworów czołowych poetów tej epoki: Mikołaja Sępa Szarzyńskiego i Sebastiana Grabowieckiego. Dobry duch występuje w nich przede wszystkim jako wzór dla człowieka, którego naśladowanie doprowadzi istotę tak marną i słabą, jak człowiek, do radości wiecznej w niebie.

The central figure of this project is an angel as a literary figure presented in the Old Polish poetry. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate ways of portraying angels, their functions and relationships with a man in the Old Polish poetry. This work also presents a dialogue between the authors and the angelological tradition as well as their individual approach to angels. Individual chapters of this project present the theme of an angel in the poetry of the consecutive literary periods - from the Middle Ages to the Baroque.The first chapter discusses the birth of the angelology thought and the ancient concept of intermediate beings. It refers to the views of Clement of Alexandria, Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, Origen and others. This section describes the way angels function in the Bible as well as the Church Fathers’ teachings. It also presents the general trends in portraying good spirits in belles-lettres.The second chapter presents angels in the Middle Ages. In the beginning, main themes of the angelology thought of that period were shown and the beliefs of the following saints were presented: Bonaventure, Hildegard of Bingen, Thomas Aquinas. This section also refers to the eschatology of the Middle Ages and to the place of angels in the afterlife beliefs. Further sections present the figure of an angel in prayers, services, sermons, the Apocrypha as well as Polish songs and carols. Special attention in depicting good spirits was paid to their functioning with people and angelophany.The third chapter presents the role of angels in the poetry of Jan Kochanowski. Selected texts from Kochanowski’s Laments, Psalms and Songs were analysed. His attitude to good spirits and their functions in his works were shown. An angel in Kochanowski’s poetry appears to be a man’s comforter. This chapter also refers to the main concepts of angelology in the Renaissance – the views of St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Teresa of Awila.The final chapter discusses the role of angels in the Baroque poetry based on the works of foremost poets of this period: Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński and Sebastian Grabowiecki. A good spirit mostly serves as a model for a man and only by following it can a man, a weak and miserable creature, be led to eternal joy in heaven.
