Depictions of indigenous inhabitants' culture elements from Central Mexico in the decorations of the 16th-century Christian convents.

W XVI wieku na terenie Centralnego Meksyku przybyli z Europy zakonnicy zakładali konwenty będące częścią programu ewangelizacji Azteków. Były one bogato zdobione, zarówno architektonicznie, jak i malarsko, czego autorami byli lokalni artyści. Występują w nich głównie przedstawienia o tematyce chrześcijańskiej, lecz widoczne są tam również elementy kultury i wierzeń rdzennych mieszkańców tego regionu. Celem niniejszej rozprawy jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy te elementy oraz dekoracje konwentów ogółem miały tylko i wyłącznie funkcje estetyczne, a jeśli nie to jakie i czy we wszystkich konwentach funkcje były takie same. Dodatkowo, dokonano analizy symboliki widocznej w tych przedstawieniach i czy miała ona znaczenie tylko dla chrześcijańskich zakonników, czy może również dla miejscowej ludności. Pod rozwagę zostało również wzięte pytanie, czy na ich podstawie można wnioskować o metodach ewangelizacji. Rozważania opierają się na analizie dekoracji czterech konwentów reprezentatywnych dla ogółu zjawiska.

In the 16th century, European monks in Central Mexico established convents as part of the program of the evangelization of the Aztecs. These convents were richly decorated, both architecturally and pictorially, by local artists. They feature primarily Christian depictions, but also reflect elements of the culture and beliefs of the indigenous inhabitants of this region. The aim of this dissertation is to answer the question of whether these elements and the decorations of the convents generally served only aesthetic purposes, and if not, what were those purposes and whether they were the same in all convents. Additionally, the symbolism visible in these depictions was analyzed, and whether it held significance only for the Christian monks or perhaps for the local inhabitants as well. The question of whether these depictions can be used to make conclusions about evangelization methods was also considered. The discussion is based on analysis of the decorations of four convents representative of the phenomenon.
