Wyrusza z Karlsbadu 3 września 1786 roku,a na Sycylię dociera 2 kwietnia 1787 roku.Przemierza takie miasta jak: Palermo, Segesta, Agrygent, Katania, Taormina i Mesyna. Zwiedza wiele zabytków, które są zgodne z wizją klasycznego piękna. Poza zainteresowaniami dotyczącymi sztuki, Goethe poświęca dużo uwagi swoim pasjom naukowym. Podczas podróży spotyka wielu ludzi, którzy pomagają mu zrozumieć otaczającą go rzeczywistość. Ponadto Goethe dokonuje oceny mieszkańców, na podstawie swoich obserwacji, przygląda się kulturze i tradycjom. Dzięki tej wyprawie spełnia swoje marzenie o podróży do Włoch, a wszystkie spostrzeżenia zapisuje w formie listów. Do Weimaru wraca 18 czerwca 1788 roku.

The main purpose of Goethe's journey was to discover himself anew as a writer. He left Karlsbad on September 3, 1786 and reached Sicily on April 2, 1787. He passed through Palermo, Segesta, Agrigento, Catania, Taormina and Messina and visited many places of historical interest harmonizing with the concept of classical beauty. In addition to his artistic interests, Goethe devoted a lot of attention to his scientific fascinations. During his journey, he met many persons who helped him to deepen his understanding of the surrounding reality. In addition to that, he observed and formed opinions about local residents and appreciated their culture and traditions. His dreams about traveling to Italy turned into reality and he wrote all his observations as a series of letters. He returned to Weimar on June 18, 1788.

Grazie al suo viaggio Goethe può scoprire di nuovo se stesso come artista. Il 3 settembre 1786 parte da Karlsbad e arriva in Sicilia il 2 aprile 1787. Passa per varie città, tra cui: Palermo, Segesta, Agrigento, Catania, Taormina e Messina. Visita tanti monumenti che rappresentano il bello classico. Oltre all'interesse per l'arte Goethe dedica molta atenzione all'interesse scientifiche. Per di più incontra molte persone che l'aiutano a capire meglio la realtà che lo circonda. Inoltre Goethe giudica la gente sulla base delle sue osservazioni, analizza la loro cultura e le tradizioni. Grazie a questo viaggio si realizza il suo sogno di andare in Italia. Tutte le sue osservazioni descrive nelle lettere. A Weimar torna il 18 giugno 1788.
