Between Faith And Science. The Role of Science Fiction in the Works of Andrei Tarkovsky

Tematem pracy jest sposób wykorzystania gatunku science fiction przez rosyjskiego reżysera Andrieja Tarkowskiego. Jej celem jest zbadanie wpływu różnych konwencji i tradycji fantastyki naukowej na filmy Solaris oraz Stalker. Pierwszy rozdział opisuje ewolucję gatunku, postępującą, zgodnie z typologią zaproponowaną przez amerykańskiego historyka filmu Thomasa Schatza, od jego fazy eksperymentalnej aż po dojrzałą samoświadomość twórców SF lat sześćdziesiątych i siedemdziesiątych. Druga część stanowi próbę przyjrzenia się specyfice rosyjskiego science ficiton z jego bogatym zapleczem historycznym, intelektualnym oraz ideologicznym. Ostatni rozdział zawiera analizę dwóch wyżej wymienionych filmów Andrieja Tarkowskiego pod kątem obecności konwencji fantastycznonaukowych oraz ich wpływu na kształt obu utworów, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich autorskiego charakteru oraz religijnego przesłania. Dopełnieniem pracy jest podsumowanie, rozważające obecność elementów fantastycznonaukowych w ostatnim filmie Andrieja Tarkowskiego, Ofiarowaniu.

The theme of the work is the use of science fiction by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky. Its purpose is to examine the influences of tradition and various conventions of science fiction on Solaris and Stalker. The first chapter describes the evolution of genre, advancing, according to the typology proposed by an American film historian Thomas Schatz, from its experimental phase to the mature self-consciousness of the SF authors of sixties and seventies. The second part is an attempt to look at the specifics of Russian science ficiton, including its rich historical, intellectual and ideological background. The final chapter provides an analysis of the two aforementioned films by Andrei Tarkovsky for the presence of science fiction conventions and their impact on the shape of both works, with special reference to their authorial character and the religious message. Complementing the work is a summary, considering the presence of science fiction elements in Andrei Tarkovsky's last film, The Sacrifice.
