Political and military involvement of Syrian Christians in the Syrian War.

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest omówienie społecznego i militarnego zaangażowania chrześcijan syryjskich w wojnę w Syrii. W pracy omówiono znaczenie Syrii dla chrześcijaństwa oraz historię poszczególnych Kościołów działających obecnie w tym kraju. Przedstawiono także proces eskalacji protestów Arabskiej Wiosny w konflikt zbrojny oraz radykalizację opozycji i jej zdominowanie przez ruchy islamistyczne. Dzięki znajomości szerszego kontekstu społeczno-religijnego przystąpiono do analizy stosunku chrześcijan do różnych stron konfliktu. Omówiono postawę chrześcijan wobec rebelii, ich stosunek do władz w Damaszku oraz działalność militarną w milicjach konfesyjnych i politycznych. Analizie poddane zostały także relacje chrześcijan z Kurdami w pólnocno-wschodniej Syrii oraz stanowiska poszczególnych Kościołów wobec trwającego konfliktu. Rozważanym problemem badawczym było ustalenie przyczyn współpracy chrześcijan z syryjskim rządem i Kurdami oraz powodów odrzucenia przez nich syryjskiej rebelii.

The subject of this thesis is the description of the social and military involvement of Syrian Christians in the war in Syria. The paper discusses the importance of Syria for Christianity and the history of individual Churches currently active in this country. The process of escalating the Arab Spring protests into an armed conflict as well as the radicalization of the opposition, and its takeover by Islamist movements is also presented. Thanks to the knowledge of the broader socio-religious context, an analysis of the attitudes of Christians towards various belligerents of the conflict was initiated. The attitude of Christians towards the rebellion, their attitude towards the authorities in Damascus, and military activity in confessional and political militias was discussed. The relations between Christians and Kurds in northeast Syria and the stances of individual Churches in the ongoing conflict were also analyzed. The research problem under consideration was the establishment of reasons for the cooperation of Christians with the Syrian government and the Kurds, as well as the reasons for their rejection of the Syrian rebellion.
