Ukrainian graves in Rakowicki Cemetery as the example of saving the Ukrainian identity

The Thesis consists of eight paragraphs. The introduction contains general information about the reason of choosing this particular subject, as well as the method of the research which was used by the author.The second paragraph presents the general information about Rakowicki Cemetery, the etymology of the word and the attempt to define it; history of the Cemetery and the localization of the graves within its area.The third paragraph is called „Ukrainians in Cracow”. The feeling of national identity among Galician Ukrainians was described in it. The social groups that built up the Ukrainian society in Cracow was characterized: the priests, the workers of Gareco-Catholic parish, scientists, professors and students of Cracovian universities, artists, soldiers and the others. The cemetery symbolism is another part of the presented dissertation. The plan of cemetery, the types of graves , inscriptions and epitaphian symbols, the portraits of deceased and the cross as the symbol of the grave were described in this part of the dissertation . The fifth paragraph is about the way the Ukrainians were commemorated. The two distinct indicators that make them different form the others is the language in which the epitaphium was written and the Easters type of the cross ( Orthodox).Consecutively, the condition of the graves was described. There are also graves in the list that did not last till the present times. The attempt to determine the reason of such bad condition of the graves is being raised by the author. The catalogue of the people buried with Ukrainian nationality is the part of presented dissertation. It consists of forty names divided according to their social groups, mentioned in the paragraph 3.2. The information about the particular person contains their name and surname, date and place of their birth, short biographic note , symbol of the grave number, short description of the way it looks like and a photograph. Additionally, the map of the cemetery is attached together indicating the places where the graves were found. The results of the presented research were presented in the summary of dissertation.

Praca składa się z ośmiu rozdziałów. Wstęp zawiera ogólne informacje na temat przyczyn wyboru tematu oraz metody badawczej, która posługiwał się autor.Drugi rozdział dotyczy ogólnych wiadomości na temat cmentarza Rakowickiego: etymologii słowa i próby jego definicji, historii cmentarza oraz sposobu lokalizacji grobów na jego terenie.Trzeci rozdział nosi tytuł „Ukraińcy w Krakowie”. Opisana jest w nim kwestia poczucia tożsamości narodowej galicyjskich Ukraińców. Scharakteryzowane zostały także poszczególne grupy społeczne, w tworzące krakowską społeczność ukraińską: księża i pracownicy parafii greckokatolickiej, uczeni, profesorowie i studenci krakowskich uczelni, artyści, żołnierze i inni. Symbolika cmentarna to temat następnej części niniejszej pracy. Omówiony zostaje plan cmentarza, rodzaje nagrobków, inskrypcje i symbole epitafijne, wizerunki zmarłych, krzyż jako symbol oznaczenia pochówku. Rozdział piąty dotyczy sposobów upamiętniania Ukraińców. Dwoma podstawowymi wyznacznikami, odróżniającymi je wśród innych, jest język, w którym napisane jest epitafium, oraz wschodni, prawosławny typ krzyża.Następnie opisany został stan zachowania ukraińskich nagrobków. W spisie figurują także nagrobki niezachowane do dnia dzisiejszego. Podejmowana jest próba diagnozy przyczyn złego stanu technicznego niektórych grobów.Częścią pracy jest katalog osób narodowości ukraińskiej, pochowanych na cmentarzu Rakowickim. Zawiera on 40 nazwisk, podzielonych według przynależności do grup społecznych, wymienionych w rozdziale 3.2. niniejszej pracy. Informacja dotycząca danej osoby zawiera jej imię i nazwisko, daty życia wraz z miejscem urodzenia i śmierci, krótką notę biograficzną, symbol kwatery, opis wyglądu grobu oraz jego zdjęcia. Ponadto dołączona jest mapa cmentarza, na której numerami zostały oznaczone znalezione groby.W zakończeniu przedstawione są wnioski wynikające z przeprowadzonych badań.
