Etymological similarities between the names of Polish and French weeds

Praca bada podobieństwa etymologiczne nazw chwastów w języku polskim i francuskim. W pierwszej części omówiono niektóre definicje słowa chwast i odpowiedziano na pytanie, czemu warto badać etymologię nazw. Część praktyczna oparta jest na analizie porównawczej różnych nazw pospolitych chwastów, skoncentrowanej na etymologii i wynikającej z badania słów wchodzących w skład wybranych fitonimów. Analiza etymologiczna pokazuje, na jakiej podstawie nazywane są rośliny. Zauważone podobieństwa pomiędzy francuskimi i polskimi fitonimami odnoszą się do wielu cech i właściwości roślin np. koloru kwiatów, sposobu rośnięcia lub kształtu.

The thesis scrutinises the etymological similarities between the names of Polish and French weeds. The first part discusses some notions of the word weed and answers the question why is it worth to study the etymology of names. The practical part is based on the comparative analysis of several common names of weeds, and is focused on the etymology, as a result of the study of words that are part of the selected phytonymes. The etymological analysis shows the basis on which plants are named, and the similarities noted between French and Polish phytonymes refer to several characteristics and properties of plants eg. flower color, way of growth or their form.

Le mémoire examine des ressemblances étymologiques de noms des adventices polonaises et françaises. La première partie aborde quelque notions du mot adventice et répond à la question de savoir pourquoi étudier l’étymologie des noms. La partie pratique est basée sur l’analyse comparative de plusieurs noms vernaculaires des mauvaises herbes, concentrée sur l’étymologie et issue de l’étude des mots qui font partie de phytonymes sélectionnés. L’analyse étymologique montre sur quelle base les plantes sont nommées, les ressemblances entre des phytonymes français et polonais que l’on note se réfèrent à plusieurs caractéristiques et propriétés des plantes p.ex. à la couleur des fleurs, au moyen de croissance ou à la forme.
