The dynamics and structure of the social network and subjective assessment of social support among Polish students in London

Celem przeprowadzonych badań było prześledzenie dynamiki rozwoju sieci społecznych polskich studentów w Londynie oraz zweryfikowanie istnienia związku pomiędzy posiadanym kapitałem społecznym a przystosowaniem do nowego środowiska społeczno-kulturowego. Ważnym aspektem przeprowadzonego badanie była również rola uczelni w procesie adaptacji obcokrajowców. W badaniu wzięło udział 20 osób w wieku od 21 do 27 lat będący studentami Uniwersytetu Roehampton w Londynie. Wykorzystano metodę wywiadu indywidualnego, częściowo ustrukturyzowanego, natomiast przy analizie uzyskanych wywiadów posłużono się programem QDA Miner wersja 4.0.4.Analiza danych jakościowych wykazała związek między strukturą i jakością relacji społecznych a poziomem przystosowania oraz ogólnym poziomem satysfakcji z pobytu za granicą.

The objective of this study was to investigate the dynamics of social networks of Polish students in London, UK and to verify the existence of the relationship between social capital owned and adaptation to the new socio-cultural environment. An important aspect of the conducted study was to identify the role of the university in the process of adaptation of foreigners.The study involved 20 subjects aged 21 to 27 years who currently are or were students of the University of Roehampton in London, UK. Whilst an individual interview (in part structured) was used as the main method in this study, the analysis of the conducted interviews was carried out by utilising the analysis software QDA Miner version 4.0.4.The analysis of qualitative data gathered for the purpose of this dissertation revealed a strong relationship between the structure and quality of social relationships and the level of adaptation, as well as the overall level of satisfaction with the stay abroad.
