Saracen Characters in Chanson de Roland and Prise d'Orange

Niniejsza praca stanowi studium postaci saraceńskich pojawiających się w dwóch starofrancuskich anonimowych pieśniach rycerskich: „Pieśni o Rolandzie” (koniec XI w. / początek XII w.) i „Zdobyciu Orange” (XII w.). Analizie zostały poddane: sposób obrazowania owych postaci, ich znaczenie dla konstrukcji i znaczenia świata przedstawionego utworów, oraz możliwe inspiracje zaczerpnięte z historii średniowiecznej. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy przybliża czytelnikowi tło historyczne w kwestii stosunków europejsko-saraceńskich, a także sposób, w jaki Europejczycy postrzegali Saracenów. Dwa kolejne rozdziały zawierają analizę najważniejszych postaci saraceńskich z każdego z w/w utworów. Praca ma charakter interdyscyplinarny, gdyż łączy analizę literacką z wiedzą na temat historii średniowiecza i elementami historii idei.

This thesis constitutes a study of Saracen characters appearing in two anonymous chansons de geste in Old French: Chanson de Roland (late 11th century / early 12th century) and Prise d’Orange (12th century). The analysed aspects include the way these characters are conceived, their significance regarding the creation and the meaning of the presented world in these works, as well as possible inspiration taken from medieval history. The thesis is composed of three chapters. The first one familiarizes the reader with the historical background of European-Saracen relations, in addition to the way that Europeans perceived Saracens. The two subsequent chapters contain an analysis of the crucial Saracen characters from each of the aforementioned works. The thesis is of an interdisciplinary nature, as it combines literary analysis with knowledge of medieval history and elements of the history of ideas.

Ce mémoire de maîtrise constitue l’étude des personnages sarrasins apparaissant dans deux chansons de gestes anonymes en ancien français : la Chanson de Roland (la fin du XIe siècle / le début du XIIe siècle) et la Prise d’Orange (XIIe siècle). On analyse des aspects tels que : le moyen dont ces personnages sont conçus, leur signification pour la construction du monde présenté dans ces œuvres, ainsi que de possibles inspirations tirées de l’histoire médiévale. Le mémoire se compose de trois chapitres. Le premier rapproche le lecteur de l’arrière-fond historique dans le domaine des rapports entre les Européens et les Sarrasins, de même que de la façon dont les Européens percevaient les Sarrasins. Les deux chapitres suivants incluent l’analyse des personnages sarrasins les plus emblématiques de chaque œuvre susmentionnée. Le mémoire est de nature interdisciplinaire, puisqu’il lie l’analyse littéraire à la connaissance de l’histoire médiévale et aux éléments de l’histoire des idées.
