From melancholy to depression – pictures of the „sickness of the soul” in the literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. Comparison of Ulana by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Niniejsza praca ma na celu zauważenie momentu medykalizacji melancholii. Pierwszy rozdział przybliża historię oraz symbolikę melancholii od wyobrażeń starożytnych do dziewiętnastowiecznych oraz przedstawia zagadnienie depresji jako medycznej postaci melancholii. Szczególnie istotna dla rozważań jest perspektywa kobieca w kontekście choroby psychicznej, dlatego część teoretyczna skupia się również na figurze Ofelii w sztuce. Trzeci rozdział pracy jest analizą komparatystyczną wybranych dzieł prozatorskich: Ulany Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego i Szklanego klosza Sylvii Plath. Rozważania zawarte w pracy skupiają się na porównaniu obu tekstów w kontekście postrzegania zaburzeń psychicznych, wykorzystywanej metaforyki oraz sposobów leczenia. Do analizy wybrane zostały wątki postrzegania upływu czasu, śmierci, macierzyństwa oraz sposób ukazania odosobnienia bohaterek obu powieści.

This thesis aims to recognize the moment of medicalization of melancholy. The first chapter introduces the history and symbolism of melancholy from the ancient to the nineteenth century and presents the problem of depression as a medical form of melancholy. The female perspective in the context of mental illness is particularly important for the considerations, therefore the theoretical part also focuses on the figure of Ophelia in art. The third chapter of the dissertation is a comparative analysis of selected works of prose: Ulana by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. The considerations contained in the thesis focus on the comparison of the two texts in the context of the perception of mental disorders, used metaphors and methods of treatment. The topics of perception of the passage of time, death, motherhood and the way of showing the isolation of the protagonists of both novels were selected for analysis.
