Gothic vaults in Krakow in the years 1500-1570

W Krakowie zachował się spory zespół późnogotyckich sklepień z XVI wieku, który jak dotąd nie cieszył się zbyt dużym zainteresowaniem badaczy. Zasadnicza część pracy poprzedzona jest krótkim omówieniem rozwoju dekoracyjnych figuracji sklepiennych w Krakowie w wiekach XIV i XV. W kolejnych rozdziałach zostały przedstawione przekrycia w kaplicach kościoła Mariackiego, w Collegium Maius, grupa sieci w typie katedralnym (w tzw. sali Fontanowskiej w kamienicy pod Gruszką, izbie tylnej kamienicy Szarej, w bibliotece klasztoru Cystersów w Mogile i w prezbiterium kościoła Św. Krzyża), a także sklepienia w trzecim wirydarzu klasztoru Dominikanów, nieistniejącym już kościele św. Ducha i w Starej Synagodze. Ostatecznym wynikiem rozważań są nowe propozycje datacji niektórych z omówionych zabytków (przede wszystkim w kościele Mariackim), a także wskazanie na źródła formalne stosowanych wtedy figuracji. Zauważalna jest przede wszystkim popularność rozwiązań postparlerowskich, a także duże znaczenie przekryć w kaplicach krakowskiej fary dla dalszego rozwoju architektury w Małopolsce. Co ponadto istotne, późnogotyckie sklepienia rozwijają się długo równolegle z powstającą już architekturą renesansową, jednak ostatecznie zanikają pod koniec XVI wieku.

A big complex of the late gothic vaults from the 16th century survived in Krakow, but it attracted relatively little interest of researchers. The first part of the thesis presents the development of the decorative vaults in Krakow in the 14th and 15th centuries. The main subject of this paper are the vaults in the chapels of Saint Mary's Church, in the Collegium Maius, the group of net vaults of the s.c. cathedral type (in the Fontana’s Room in the "House Under the Pear", in the "Grey House", in the Library of the Cistercian Abbey in Mogiła and in the presbytery of the Church of the Holy Cross) and the vaults in the third cloister of the Dominican Monastery, in the today's non-existent Church of the Holy Spirit and in the Old Synagogue. The results of this research are: a new dating of some of the monuments (first of all in the Saint Mary's Church) and an analysis of the origin of the vaulting patterns. Especially noticeable in this period were post-parlerian solutions and a big impact of the Saint Mary's Church on the architecture of Lesser Poland. The late gothic vaults were popular simultaneously with the development of the Renaissance architecture, but they eventually disappeared at the end of the 16th century.
