Historia badań nad stwardnieniem guzowatym osiąga dopiero niecałe 200 lat. Jest to rzadka choroba genetyczna, determinująca powstawanie zmian w mózgu i innych ważnych narządach. Objawy obejmują napady drgawkowe, niepełnosprawność intelektualną, a także objawy związane z zajęciem nerek czy płuc. Stwardnienie guzowate inaczej zwane chorobą Bourneville’a-Pringle’a, zostało opisane po raz pierwszy w 1880 roku przez neurologa Désiréa-Magloire’a Bourneville’a. Ze względu na duży procent występowania napadów padaczkowych, elektroencefalografia często jest jednym z pierwszych badań diagnostycznych u tych chorych.

The history of research on tuberous sclerosis reaches less than 200 years. It is a rare genetic disease that determines formation of changes in the brain and other important organs. Symptoms include seizures, intellectual disability and symptoms associated with presence of tumor in kidney or lung. Tuberous sclerosis, known as Bourneville-Pringle disease, for the first time was describe in 1880 by neurologist Désiré-Magloire Bourneville. Due to the high percentage of epileptic seizures, electroencephalography is often one of the first diagnostic tests for these patients.
