The attitude of Emperor Julian the Apostate towards Jews and Judaism

Celem niniejszej pracy jest ukazanie stosunku jaki przejawiał cesarz Julian Apostata wobec społeczności żydowskiej oraz jej religii – judaizmu. W jej pierwszym rozdziale została krótko nakreślona sytuacja ludności żydowskiej na terenach Cesarstwa Rzymskiego w okresie popowstaniowym skupiając się na stosunku panujących oraz ogółu społeczeństwa do tej grupy etniczno-religijnej. Następnie została przedstawiona sama religijność Juliana, a także krótka charakterystyka jego reform religijnych, zarówno tych zrealizowanych, jak i tych nieudanych. Kolejny rozdział, który stanowi pierwszą właściwą część niniejszej pracy, poświęcony został stosunkowi tegoż cesarza do społeczności żydowskiej. Analizie poddane zostało miejsce jakie Żydzi zajmowali w polityce zarówno wewnętrznej, jak i zewnętrznej cesarza. Przedstawiona została również kwestia Listu do społeczności żydowskiej, tzn. problem jego autentyczności oraz jego treści, a także opis nieudanej próby odbudowy Świątyni Jerozolimskiej. Druga część natomiast opisuje spojrzenie Juliana na judaizm, zarówno na jego stronę teologiczną, jak i warstwę rytualną oraz na szeroko rozumianą kulturę żydowską.

The aim of this paper is to present the attitude that Emperor Julian the Apostate displayed towards the Jewish community and its religion—Judaism. The first chapter briefly outlines the situation of the Jewish population within the Roman Empire in the post-revolt period, focusing on the attitude of the ruling authorities and the general society towards this ethnic-religious group. Following this, Julian’s own religiosity is presented, along with a brief characterization of his religious reforms, both those implemented and those that failed. The next chapter, which forms the first main part of this work, is dedicated to the emperor's attitude towards the Jewish community. It analyzes the role that Jews played in both the internal and external politics of the emperor. The issue of the Letter to the Jewish Community is also discussed, specifically the problem of its authenticity and its contents, as well as the failed attempt to rebuild the Temple of Jerusalem. The second part, in turn, describes Julian's view of Judaism, including both its theological and ritual aspects, as well as the broader Jewish culture.
