Klemens von Metternich and Otto von Bismarck - the comparison of their political visions and considerations on the role of the individual in history making

Praca w swojej pierwszej części stanowi porównanie wizji politycznej Klemensa von Metternicha i Otto von Bismarcka. Wskazuje na to, co łączyło tych obu wielkich dyplomatów oraz wymienia różnice w ich poglądach na XIX-wieczny europejski ład polityczny. Próbuje także odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jak bardzo obecność obu mężów stanu wpłynęła na losy Austrii i Niemiec. Drugą część pracy stanowią rozważania nad rolą jednostki w historii. Podsumowuje ona psychologiczne i historycznie uwarunkowania uznawania niektórych postaci jako wybitnych w społeczeństwie, z naciskiem na postacie związane ze światem polityki. Prezentuje kilka teorii poświęconych idei wielkiego człowieka, zwłaszcza teorię Thomasa Carlyla i Jerzego Plechanowa. Na koniec wspomina o teoriach negujących znaczenie jednostki dla przepływu wydarzeń historycznych.

This paper provides a comparison of Metternich's and Bismarck's view on European political order in the XIX century. It tries to track what both great diplomats have in common and what are the diferences between them. It tries to answer the question how important their appearance in German and Austrian history was to the political evolution of those two countries. Second part of the paper gives an analysis on the importance of the individual in history making. It tries to summarize both psychological and historical reasons of people’s admiration towards specific individuals, who are considered to have an unarguable influence on different kinds of scientific fields with the emphasis on politics. The paper presents and compares a number of theories dedicated to The Great Man Theory, stressing the importance of Thomas Carlyle’s and Jerzy Plechanow’s interpretations of the topic. The paper argues that proper significance should be given to the role of the individual in history and provides an explanation to this statement. At the very end, it presents counterarguments and theories claiming a decline in the importance of the individual per se and the individual in history making.
