Analiza w trzech aktach: stylometryczne studium dzieł Agathy Christie oraz ich francuskich i polskich tłumaczeń

Niniejsza praca przedstawia wyniki stylometrycznej analizy dzieł Agathy Christie oraz ich francuskich i polskich przekładów pod kątem zależności między tekstami. Pracę otwiera opis stylometrii oraz prezentacja metod użytych w pracy. Należy do nich analiza najczęściej powtarzających się słów przy użyciu wypróbowanych procedur obliczeniowych, takich jak Delta Burrowsa. Następnie praca przedstawia krótką biografię Agaty Christie oraz krytykę jej dzieł. Dalsza część pracy została poświęcona wynikom analizy tekstów. Co do dzieł Agathy Christie w oryginale, analiza wykazała obecność silnego sygnału chronologicznego, któremu podlegają wszystkie teksty prócz romansów. Późne dzieła Christie wyróżniają się, potwierdzając wyniki wcześniejszych badań nad możliwością występowania choroby Alzheimera pod koniec życia autorki. Analiza wykazała również zależności między tekstami wynikające z gatunku literackiego i głównej postaci. Francuskie tłumaczenia przejawiają silny sygnał tłumacza, któremu podporządkowane są wszystkie inne zależności między tekstami, as liczby słów w tłumaczeniach do liczby słów w oryginale nie przejawia żadnych prawidłowości. Polskie tłumaczenia są transparentne, z wyjątkiem dzieł Tadeusza Dehnela. Stosunek liczby słów w tłumaczeniach do liczby słów w oryginale jest zgodny z tendencją dla tłumaczeń z angielskiego na polski, a zależności występujące między tekstami w oryginale zostały zachowane.

This paper is a stylometric analysis of Agatha Christie's works in the original, as well as their translations into French and into Polish. Its purpose is to examine relations between the texts using quantitative methods of literary analysis. It begins with an introduction of stylometry as a scientific discipline and a presentation of the methods used in the paper. These include analyzing the recurrence of most frequent words in a text using tried computational procedures such as Burrows' Delta. A short biography of Christie and examples of critical reception of her works are provided, followed by the empirical chapters presenting the results of the analyses. As concerns the original texts, a clear chronological pattern has been discovered in Christie's works, with her romance novels being the only texts in the corpus not subordinate to the chronological signal. Moreover, Christie's later works have been shown to be stylistically distinct, concurring with earlier studies on the subject. Evidence of genre-related and main character-related dependencies between texts has also been discovered. The French translations have been shown to be strongly idiosyncratic. The number of words in comparison to the original does not follow a set pattern, and all dependencies between texts are subordinate to the translatorial signal, especially in the case of Louis Postif. Polish translations, excepting the distinct works of Tadeusz Dehnel, have been shown to be largely transparent. The number of words in comparison to the original follows the trend for English-to-Polish translations, and the analyses demonstrate the same correlations as existed between the original texts.
