Architectural conception of Witruvius and its influence on Art in Cracow in the period of Renaissance

Praca stanowi próbę uchwycenia koncepcji architektonicznych Witruwiusza w sztuce krakowskiej w epoce Odrodzenia. Jej podstawą jest traktat O architekturze ksiąg dziesięć. We wstępie przedstawiona została podstawowa lektura niezbędna dla zrozumienia problematyki całości pracy. W pierwszym rozdziale pracy zostały zawarte informacje dotyczące życia i twórczości architekta Marka Witruwiusza Polliona. W rozdziale drugim został zanalizowany jego utwór pt. O architekturze ksiąg dziesięć, pod względem trwałości, użyteczności i piękna oraz wiedzy i sztuki budowlanej jakiej wymagano od architekta oraz dokonano krótkiej charakterystyki losów dzieła w epoce cesarstwa, średniowiecza oraz okresie Odrodzenia we Włoszech. W rozdziale trzecim analizie poddano dzieła polskiej sztuki renesansowej w których wpływ teorii Witruwiusza jest najbardziej zauważalny. Rozdział ten zastał podzielony na dwa podrozdziały. Pierwszy dotyczy dzieł powstających na wzgórzu wawelskim drugi natomiast dzieł które zostały zrealizowane na terenie miasta Krakowa i jego okolic.

The thesis is an attempt to present the influence of the architectural concept of Vitruvius on Polish art during the Renaissance. As the basis for this attempt, serves his famous treatise “De architectura” also known as “The Ten Books of Architecture”. The introduction presents a general description of the book which will serve as a main source allowing full understanding of topics and issues presented in the thesis. The first chapter presents a brief description of life and works of Marcus Vitruvius Pollio. In the second chapter, “The Ten Books of Architecture” is analyzed in terms of timelessness, beauty and practicality as well as knowledge and skill required from the architect. The chapter also includes the history of the treatise during the times of the Roman Empire, Middle Ages and Renaissance in Italy. The third chapter focuses on the creations of Polish Renaissance in which the influence of Vitruvius’s theory is most visible. For this purpose the chapter is divided into two sub-chapters. The first one is focused on the constructions erected on Wawel Hill while the second one is devoted to the structures completed in Cracow and surrounding areas.
