By applying the method of rhetorical reading to William Caxton’s preface to Le Morte d’Arthur, the paper attempts to reveal certain ambiguities in the printers description concerning his decision to publish Malory’s work. Reconstructing the historical context in which the preface was originally perceived, describing the author’s choices in the field of invention and referring to Thomas H. Crofts’ analysis of Caxton’s understanding of the notion of historicity, it tries to answer the question of the role Caxton’s preface played in the reception of Malory’s work
