The culinary term pieróg (pl. pierogi) generally denotes two types of stuffed dishes across the Slavdom: cooked dumplings in Poland, Slovakia and Eastern Moravia, and baked pies in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. It is not used in other Slavic countries. The etymology of this word has been the subject of much debate but the question has never been ultimately settled. This author recapitulates all the propositions hitherto proposed, comments on them, and adds some new suggestions.
