Romani musical intermediaries as cultural translators from an intersectional perspective : the case of Panna Cinka
This chapter examines the life and work of Romani violinist Panna Cinka (1711-1772) through the lens of intersectionality. Cinka is a prime example of a Romani cultural translator and an excellent representative of Romani musical intermediaries who integrated their musical activities into broadly defined translative practices. As a successful female Romani musician, Panna Cinka was selected as the focus of this chapter, but this text also argues that Romani musicians in general relied on their translative skills and excelled in translating musical styles and genres and, in doing so, their acts of cultural translation transcended the boundaries of a semiotic system.
