OPEC’s role in the development of international crude oil market

Praca dotyczy roli jaką odgrywa Organizacja Krajów Eksportujących Ropę Naftową (OPEC) na międzynarodowym rynku ropy naftowej. Dokonano charakterystyki rynku surowca wraz z opisem globalnych zasobów i rezerw ropy oraz sformułowano podział jej głównych zastosowań. Zanalizowano także giełdy, na których notowany jest surowiec, o największym znaczeniu dla rynku ropy naftowej. Skupiono się również na kryzysach naftowych oraz mniejszych szokach cenowych i implikacjach jakie wniosły na późniejsze funkcjonowanie rynku. Zostały wyróżnione czynniki makroekonomiczne oraz polityczne, które bezpośrednio wpływają na sektor naftowy, a także sprawdzono jaki związek zachodzi pomiędzy notowaniami ropy a kursem dolara. Na podstawie prognoz sporządzonych dla nadchodzących lat, wyróżniono zagrożenia i przedstawiono nowe wyzwania stojące przed rynkiem energetycznym. Dokonano analizy OPEC, okoliczności jej założenia, wydarzeń, w których organizacja brała udział na przestrzeni lat, a także zobrazowano strukturę organizacji, która pozwala na jej funkcjonowanie. Została przedstawiona charakterystyka jej działalności, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wpływu na kształtowanie podaży na rynku ropy naftowej za pomocą dostosowywania wielkości produkcji surowca do potrzeb rynku oraz opisano problem przekraczania limitów produkcyjnych przez państwa członkowskie. Nakreślono rolę jaką odgrywa Arabia Saudyjska w OPEC jako kraj o największych złożach ropy i możliwościach wywierania wpływu na organizację. Dodatkowo ustalono jak informacje na temat działań OPEC wpływają na zmianę ceny surowca i oczekiwania co do przyszłości rynku naftowego.

The thesis refers to the role of OPEC in the international oil markets. It contains the characteristics of the oil sector along with a description of global oil resources and as well as a division of its main applications. It points to the stock exchanges on which the petroleum of the greatest importance for the crude oil market is listed and to oil crises, smaller price shocks and implications for the subsequent functioning of the market. Next it highlights the macroeconomic and political factors for oil-producing countries that affect the oil sector directly and checks the relationship between the oil price and the dollar exchange rate. Referring to the forecasts prepared for the upcoming years for the raw material market, the author distinguished threats to its operation in its current form and presented new challenges that the energy market is facing. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, the circumstances of its establishment, the events in which the organization participated over the years were analysed, and the structure of the organization that allows it to function was presented. The thesis contains the characteristics of OPEC’s activities, with particular emphasis on its impact on supply by adjusting the volume of oil production to the market needs not ignoring the problem of exceeding production limits by the Member States. The role of Saudi Arabia in OPEC, as the country with the largest oil reserves and the ability to influence the organization was outstanding. Finally, it was discussed how information on OPEC activities influences the change in the oil price and expectations regarding the future of the crude oil market.
