Dominique Rolin showed a real cult of dreams, which she treated as a second reality. Through its evocative unreality, the novel Les marais (The Marshes) demonstrates features of magical realism. The place and time of the novel are unspecifi ed. The characters – a family of fi ve “monsters” – seem to live among madness and dreams. In such a world, happiness is impossible to achieve, whereas fear and death are omnipresent.
