Between censorship and propaganda : Dubrovnik under the control of French administrationand the activity of local cultural elites

Artykuł prezentuje kwestię aktywności dubrownickich elit kulturalnych w okresie francuskiej okupacji Dubrownika. Punktem wyjścia do rozważań są działania propagandowe i cenzorskie władz Republiki Dubrownickiej przed jej zniesieniem, odnoszące się do napływających do miasta idei i poglądów z Francji. Ważną częścią zaprezentowanych analiz są także zagadnienia dotyczące organizacji francuskiej administracji w Dubrowniku na początku XIX w. Na tym tle omówiono różne przejawy działalności dubrownickiej elity – wspierającej nowe władze i propagującej nowy porządek – przede wszystkim na płaszczyźnie literackiej i kulturalnej. W podsumowaniu artykułu podkreślono, że okres krótkiej francuskiej okupacji Dubrownika, charakteryzującej się stosowaniem „makiawelistycznych metod”, w tym propagandy i cenzury, stał się wstępem do dłuższego – i trudniejszego dla miejscowych elit - austriackiego zarządu nad miastem.

The article presents the issue of the activity of Dubrovnik’s cultural elites during the period of French occupation. The starting point for the discussion is the propaganda and censorship measures taken by the authorities of the Republic of Dubrovnik before its abolition, which were aimed at managing the influx of ideas and opinions from France. An important part of the analysis also addresses the organisation of the French administration in Dubrovnik in the early 19th century. Against this backdrop, the article discusses various manifestations of the Dubrovnik elite’s activity, which supported the new authorities and promoted the new order, primarily on the literary and cultural grounds. In the conclusion of the article, it emphasizes that the brief period of French occupation of Dubrovnik, characterized by the use of "Machiavellian methods", including propaganda and censorship, became for the local elites a prelude to the longer and more difficult Austrian rule over the city.
