Craft guilds and their role in medieval Polish cities

Praca "Cechy rzemieślnicze i ich rola w średniowiecznych miastach Polski" zajmuje się tematyką cechów rzemieślniczych funkcjonujących na terenie średniowiecznej Polski i ich znaczenia dla ówczesnych ośrodków miejskich. Głównym celem było zapoznanie się z funkcjami, sprawowanymi przez organizacje rzemieślnicze i scharakteryzowanie ich. Ponadto, podjęto próbę przedstawienia dwóch wątków pobocznych: opisania historii organizacji rzemieślniczych na ziemiach polskich oraz ukazania ich organizacji wewnętrznej.Główna część pracy stanowi opis roli cechu rzemieślniczego w mieście i charakterystyka zajmowanego przez niego miejsca w społeczeństwie miejskim.Do zebrania potrzebnych informacji wykorzystano literaturę fachową: publikacje ściśle związane z cechami rzemieślniczymi, dzieje poszczególnych miast i statutów funkcjonujących na początku szesnastego wieku korporacji. Tutaj też napotkano największe trudności ze względu na niewielkie zainteresowanie współczesnych historyków tematyką cechów rzemieślniczych.Analiza zebranej literatury pozwoliła na wyszczególnienie charakterystycznych dla cechów rzemieślniczych funkcji i przedstawienie ich znaczenia dla miast, w których zostały powołane. Pomogła również: przedstawić jakie korporacje i w jakiej liczbie funkcjonowały w poszczególnych ośrodkach miejskich, sporządzić listę podstawowych praw, przyznawanych każdej z organizacji, opisać obowiązujące w nich praktyki i wskazać zajmowane przez rzemieślników miejsce w hierarchii społecznej.Najważniejszymi rezultatami pracy wydają się: udowodnienie znaczącej roli cechów rzemieślniczych dla rozwoju średniowiecznego miasta pod względem gospodarczym, ale też społecznym oraz zobrazowanie wewnętrznego funkcjonowania korporacji, co ukazało ich wyjątkowy charakter w ówczesnym społeczeństwie.

The work "Craft guilds and their role in medieval Polish cities" deals with the subject of craft guilds operating in medieval Poland and their significance for the urban centers of the time. The main aim was to familiarize oneself with the functions performed by craft organizations and to characterize them. Moreover, an attempt was made to present two side threads: presenting the history of craft organizations on Polish territory and describing their internal structure.The main part of the work constitutes a description of the role of the craftsmen's guild in the town and the characteristics of its place in the urban society.In order to gather the necessary information, the following literature have been used: publications closely related to craftsmen's guilds, the history of individual towns and the statutes of corporations operating at the beginning of the sixteenth century. The greatest difficulties have been also encountered here because of the low interest of contemporary historians in the subject of craftsmen's guilds.The analysis of the collected literature enabled the specification the functions characteristic of the guilds and to present their significance for the towns in which they were established. It also helped to present which corporations and in what number they functioned in particular town centers, to draw up a list of basic rights granted to each of the organizations, to describe the primacy of the organizations, and to indicate the place occupied by craftsmen in the social hierarchy.The most important results of the work seem to be: proving the significant role of craftsmen's guilds for the development of the medieval town in economic but also social terms, and illustrating the internal functioning of corporations, which showed their unique character in the contemporary society.
