Jeszcze do niedawna mało kto słyszał o amerykańskiej stacji telewizyjnej Syfy. Wszystko zmieniło się 11 lipca 2013 roku, kiedy za jej pośrednictwem Stany Zjednoczone ponownie oszalały na punkcie „szczęk”. Tym razem rekinów było jednak znacznie więcej niż w filmie Stevena Spielberga, a ofiarą ich zuchwałych ataków padli nie tylko pozbawieni wyobraźni plażowicze, lecz... całe Los Angeles. Wygłodniałe drapieżniki, niesione w głąb lądu przez potężne tornado, spadały bowiem na nieszczęsnych ludzi z nieba, odgryzając im głowy lub inne części ciała. Absurdalna fabuła sprawiła, że dzieła nie można było zbyć obojętnością. Miliony widzów musiały na własne oczy przekonać się, że film o latających żarłaczach nie jest żartem, a wymieniając opinie o nim w mediach społecznościowych, wykreowały go na hit. Dziś Rekinado cieszy się statusem dzieła kultowego, pozostając najbardziej popularną produkcją ze wszystkich Syfy Original Movies.Realizację sygnowanych tą nazwą filmów stacja wspiera już od 2002 roku1. Kręcone szybko, bez zwracania uwagi na takie drobiazgi jak logika przyczynowo- skutkowa, są całkowicie pozbawione życiowego realizmu – scenarzyści nie tyle naginają obowiązujące powszechnie prawa fizyki, co wręcz tworzą je od nowa, dzięki czemu bohaterowie wychodzą bez szwanku z każdej samobójczej misji (nie straszny im lot helikopterem podczas szalejącego huraganu ani penetrowanie układów trawiennych gigantycznych potworów). W oczach mieszkańców miast, które uwalniają od terroru monstrów, stają się superbohaterami, a niejako przy okazji zdobywają miłość atrakcyjnych młodych kobiet lub ponownie rozpalają serca byłych żon. Poetykę omawianych produkcji dopełniają tandetne efekty specjalne, fontanny sztucznej krwi i pojawiające się nie wiadomo skąd roznegliżowane dziewczyny. Ponieważ trudno pozostać obojętnym wobec tak niecodziennego połączenia, filmy Syfy mają tyle samo zwolenników, co przeciwników.Nie da się jednak ukryć, że tych pierwszych przybywa, a dzięki nim stacja może się rozwijać. Zdając sobie sprawę z oczekiwań widowni, producenci realizują coraz bardziej dziwaczne scenariusze – rekiny ruszają na podbój kosmosu, a wypełzające spod ziemi pająki zieją ogniem. Jednak jak przystało na kino gatunkowe, pod maską rozrywki, kryje się ważny przekaz ideologiczny. Groteskowe kreatury, z którymi walczą bohaterowie, stają się symbolem różnych lęków obecnych w życiu współczesnego społeczeństwa amerykańskiego, takich jak strach przed katastrofami naturalnymi czy atakiem terrorystów. Choć może się to wydać niebywałe, monstra stoją na straży konserwatywnych wartości: łączą rozbite małżeństwa i powstrzymują nastolatki przed zrobieniem „kroku w dorosłość”, jakim dla wielu z nich jest pierwsze zbliżenie seksualne.Co ciekawe, to właśnie potwory przyciągają przed ekrany największą publiczność. Choć powinny wzbudzać grozę, coraz częściej stają się obiektem uwielbienia. Zarówno fani, jak i bohaterowie filmów, śledzą ich poczynania w mediach społecznościowych. Cieszą się, kiedy monstrum przyjmuje od nich zaproszenia do grona znajomych lub odpisuje na ich komentarze. Aktywność, jaką w internecie prowadzą Rekinado czy Sharktopus, pozwala podtrzymać zainteresowanie produkcjami. Najlepszą reklamą dla kolejnych dzieł wydaje się jednak absurdalna fabuła. W końcu kto by nie chciał zobaczyć latających rekinów.

Up until recently little did anyone hear about the american TV station Syfy. Everything changed on the 11th July 2013, when on it's behalf the United States went mad yet again about "the Jaws". This time though there were many more sharks than in Steven Spielberg's movie, while the victims of their impudent attacks were not only devoid of any imagination beach visitors, but... the entire Los Angeles. The ravenous predators, carried inland by a powerful tornado dropped onto the luckless people from the skies, snapping off their heads or other body parts. The absurd plot forbid disposing the work with petty indifference. Milions of spectators had to see with their own eyes, that the movie about flying great white sharks is not a joke, while exchanging opinions about it in the social media, promoted it as a hit. Today Sharknado enjoys the status of cult classic, remaining the most popular of all Syfy Original Movies.The station supports the realization of movies signed with this name since 2002. Filmed hastly, without concern put into such trivialities like cause-and-effect logic, they are completly devoid of life realism - the writers not as much bend the existing laws of physics, they outrightly create them from scratch, thanks to which the heroes come out unscathed from every suicide mission (neither are they fightened by a helicopter flight during the raging tornado nor prenetrating the digestive systems of the giant monsters). In the eyes populace living in the city, which they release from the beast terror they become superheroes and somewhat by the way acquire the love of an attractive younger woman or rekindle the hearts of their former wives. The poetic of the aformentioned production are complimented by the cheesy special effects, fountains of fake blood and undressed women appearing from God knows where. As it is impossible to remain neutral towards such an unusual mixture, the Syfy movies have as many supporters as opponents.One cannot hide that the former are growing by the numbers and thanks to them the station can expand. Being aware of their audience expectations, the producers realize more and more bizarre scenarios - the sharks venture forth to conquere space, while the spiders crawling form the ground breath fire. However, as it befits the genre cinema, underneath the guise of entertainment is hidden an important ideological message. The grotesque creatures, with whom the heroes fight become a symbol of various fears present in the modern american society, such as the fear of natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Although it may seem incredible, the monsters stand guard of conservative values: the mend broken marriges, prevent teenagers from taking the "step into adulthood", as for many is the first sexual encounter.Interestingly it is the monsters that attract the greatest part of the audience. Although they should arouse dread, they more often become the object of worship. Both the fans and the cast track their endavours in social media. They rejoice when the beasts accept their friend invitations or reply to their comments. The activity, that Sharknado or Sharktopus conduct in the internet can sustain the public interest of the productions. The best advertisement of subsequent works seems to be the absurd storyline. In the end, who wouldn't like to see flying sharks.
