The influence of classical music on the fear level in dentistry.

Problemem poruszanym w tej pracy jest oddziaływanie muzyki klasycznej na emocje strachu i lęku, występujące u pacjentów poddanych leczeniu stomatologicznemu. Celem moich badań było zweryfikowanie dwóch hipotez. Pierwszej mówiącej o wpływie muzyki na poziom strachu u pacjentów w gabinecie stomatologicznym oraz drugiej, która zakłada obniżenie poziomu strachu u pacjentów, którzy przyszli na wizytę do stomatologa. W celu weryfikacji założeń przeprowadziłem badanie w formie eksperymentu na grupie 30 klientów kliniki stomatologicznej znajdującej się w województwie Śląskim. Rozpiętość wieku badanych obejmowała osoby od 22 do 55 roku życia (M=39,93; SD=10,26).Metoda, która została zastosowana w eksperymencie, to pomiar częstotliwości pracy serca, badany za pomocą pulsoksymetru rejestrującego tętno osób uczestniczących w badaniu.Analiza wyników badania potwierdziła obie hipotezy, mianowicie muzyka wpływa na poziom strachu u pacjentów leczonych stomatologicznie oraz muzyka obniża poziom strachu u pacjentów podczas wizyty w gabinecie stomatologicznym. Wyniki niniejszej pracy mogą być pomocne dla wielu osób, często nieświadomych tego, że takie bodźce jak muzyka potrafią sprawić, że leczenie stomatologiczne może stać się mniej przerażające. Skutkować to może zmianą nastawienia do wizyty u stomatologa oraz zmniejszeniem poziomu strachu podczas każdego kolejnego leczenia stomatologicznego.

The present thesis touches upon the issue of the influence of classical music on the feelings of fear and anxiety, which are experienced by patients during dentist’s treatment. The aim of my research was to identify two hypotheses. The former concerns the influence of music on the fear level of patients at a dentist, and the latter assumes that the experienced fear level is lowered when patients are exposed to music in a dentist’s office. In order to verify the assumptions, research in form of an experiment was carried out on a group of 31 patients of a stomatology clinic in Silesia, aged between 22 and 55 (M=39,70; SD=10,15). The methodology applied in the experiment involved measuring heart beat frequency by means of a pulseoximeter which registered pulse of all experiment participants. Analysis of the results confirmed both hypotheses and showed that music actually influences fear level of patients treated odontologically and that the influence consists in lowering this fear level during a visit at a dentist. The conclusions of this thesis may be useful for many people, who are often unaware of the fact that such stimuli like music may make dentist’s treatment less terrifying. This awareness may result in a changed attitude towards visiting dentists and in a lowered anxiety before and during each visit at this kind of doctor.
