Music and Politics: The Aesthetic Dominant in Tom Stoppard’s “Every Good Boy Deserves Favour” and Its Polish Stage Translation “Pacjent EGBDF”
tłumaczenie teatralne, dominanta estetyczna
drama translation, aesthetic dominant
The thesis focuses on the field of drama translation by presenting a case study of a theatre text and its stage translation. The analysis compares the texts of Tom Stoppard's play “Every Good Boy Deserves Favour” and the translation by Jarosław Kilian, “Pacjent EGBDF”, in terms of the ‘aesthetic dominant’ (Totzeva). The choice of this criterion for the analysis was dictated by the specific nature of theatre texts, which – being incomplete until their performance – are highly liable to multiple interpretations both on the page and on the stage, which is indicative of their theatrical potential. The aesthetic dominant, understood as the main organising element of a theatre text, allows for a dynamic contextualisation. In consequence, any changes in its translation can significantly affect the general interpretation of a target text.
