The political role of Primate Jakub Uchański in the first interregnum in 1572-1573

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie roli politycznej prymasa Jakuba Uchańskiego w okresie pierwszego bezkrólewia, w latach 1572-1573.Praca została przeze mnie podzielona na trzy rozdziały. Pierwszy rozdział dotyczy okresu po śmierci króla Zygmunta Augusta do czasu zwołania zjazdu elekcyjnego. Zawarłem w nim informacje dotyczące sytuacji wewnętrznej jaka panowała w Rzeczypospolitej oraz opisałem konflikt między arcybiskupem Jakubem Uchańskim a marszałkiem wielkim koronnym Janem Firlejem o pozycję pierwszej osoby w państwie po śmierci króla. Drugi rozdział dotyczy przebiegu obrad zjazdu elekcyjnego. Został on zdominowany przez dwa ważne problemy, dotyczące bezpośrednio Uchańskiego. Pierwszym było wystąpienie arcybiskupa do szlachty i senatorów, podczas którego przedstawiał argumenty potwierdzające kompetencje prymasa jako interreksa. Natomiast drugą ważną sprawą było omówienie stosunku arcybiskupa do konfederacji generalnej warszawskiej. W ostatnim rozdziale dotyczącym zjazdu elekcyjnego skupiłem się głównie na sprawach związanych z kandydatami do tronu polskiego, omówieniem wydarzeń dotyczących korektury prawa i dalszych losów konfederacji warszawskiej.

The aim of study is to present the political role of Primate Jakub Uchański during the first interregnum, in the years 1572-1573.I divided the work into three chapters. The first chapter concerns the period after the death of king Zygmunt August until the election convention is called. I have included information on the internal situation in the Republic of Poland and described the conflict between Archbishop Jakub Uchański and Grand Marshal of the Crown Jan Firlej over the position of the first person in the state after the death of the king. The second chapter deals with the conduct of the election congress. It has been dominated by two important problems, directly affecting Uchanski. The first was the archbishop's speech to the nobility and senators, during which he presented arguments confirming the primate's competence as interrex. The second important issue was to discuss the Archbishop's attitude towards the Warsaw General Confederation. In the last chapter on the election congress, I focused mainly on matters related to the candidates for the Polish throne, discussing the events concerning the correction of the law and the further fate of the Warsaw confederation.
