Narcoturismo and the cult of narcos after the collapse of Colombia’s major drug cartels of the 1980s and 1990s.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest ukazanie zjawiska społecznego, ekonomicznego i kulturowego narcoturismo i kultu narcos oraz ich sposobu narracji w turystyce, mediach światowych i kulturze po upadku największych karteli narkotykowych w Kolumbii lat 80. i 90. XX wieku. Działalność przestępcza karteli narkotykowych w Kolumbii mocno wpłynęła na życie zwykłych mieszkańców oraz na odbiorze państwa na arenie międzynarodowej, jak również na produkcji dzieł kultury mówiących o wydarzeniach powiązanych z działalnością przestępców narkotykowych. W pracy zwracam uwagę na historię karteli narkotykowych, metodę działań, sylwetki bossów narkotykowych, jak i upadek organizacji przestępczych i ich fragmentaryzację. Pokazuję reakcje Kolumbijczyków, władz państwowych i lokalnych Kolumbii, odnośnie największych karteli narkotykowych oraz na działania mające na celu promocję kraju na płaszczyznach niezwiązanych z handlem narkotykami i turystyką narkotykową na arenie krajowej i światowej. Przedstawiam również przykłady narkokultury, produkcje krajowe i zagraniczne, które ukazywały narco, a także jak obecnie podejmowane są próby ukazania Kolumbii od innej strony, bez skupiania się na historii narkotykowej kraju. Narkoturystyka i narkokultura są aspektami ciągle dostrzeganymi w Kolumbii, szczególnie w miejscach historycznie powiązanych z działalnością karteli narkotykowych. W pracy nie zabrakło również opisu działań ze strony państwa, mieszkańców, organizacji pozarządowych i przedsiębiorstw, które są wykonywane by całkowicie pozbyć się problemu narcoturismo i kultu narcos.

The aim of this thesis is to show the social, economic and cultural phenomenon of narcoturismo and the cult of narcos and their narratives in tourism, world media and culture after the collapse of the major drug cartels in Colombia of the 1980s and 1990s. The criminal activities of the drug cartels in Colombia strongly affected the lives of ordinary citizens and the perception of the country internationally, as well as the production of cultural works that speak about events related to the activities of drug criminals. In this thesis I highlight the history of the drug cartels, their method of operation, the profiles of the drug bosses, as well as the decline of the criminal organisations and their fragmentation. I show the reactions of Colombians, the state and local authorities of Colombia, regarding the biggest drug cartels and the actions aimed at promoting the country on levels unrelated to drug trafficking and drug tourism in the national and world arena. I also present examples of narcoculture, domestic and foreign media productions that have portrayed narco, and how current attempts are being made to show Colombia from a different side, without focusing on the country's drug history. Narcotourism and narcoculture are aspects that are constantly seen in Colombia, especially in places historically linked to the activities of the drug cartels. My thesis also does not lack a description of the actions on the part of the state, residents, NGOs and companies that are being carried out to completely get rid of the problem of narcoturismo and the cult of narcos.
