The Irish question in the negotiations on Brexit between the United Kingdom and the European Union

Celem niniejszej pracy jest odpowiedź na pytanie, jakie wyzwania stawia przed Irlandią Północną i Republiką Irlandii potencjalny Brexit. Autor wyjaśnia, jakie uwarunkowania powstały na wyspie Irlandia w ciągu ostatnich stu lat, a także jakie aspekty wymagały w obliczu Brexitu uregulowania w umowie pomiędzy Unią Europejską a Zjednoczonym Królestwem. Scharakteryzowane zostają specyficzne relacje polityczne, ekonomiczne i społeczne, łączące Zjednoczone Królestwo z Irlandią. Zaprezentowane zostają punkty widzenia stron negocjacji oraz rządu irlandzkiego. Obraz skomplikowanej kwestii irlandzkiej dopełnia przywołanie stanowisk wybranych brytyjskich i irlandzkich partii politycznych wobec Brexitu oraz granicy na Wyspie. Autor relacjonuje kolejne etapy rokowań oraz prezentuje ostateczny kształt porozumienia w odniesieniu do Irlandii.

The aim of this thesis is to find out what kind of challenges potential Brexit poses to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The author explains the circumstances that arisen on the island of Ireland in the last hundred years as well as mentions what aspects needed to be regulated in the agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom in the face of Brexit. Specific political, economical and social relations between the UK and Ireland are characterised. Both negotiations parties' points of view are described, as well as the one of the Irish government. The complex matter of the Irish question is completed by the main British and Irish political parties' stances towards Brexit and the Irish border. The author narrates the following phases of the talks and describes its outcome in terms of Ireland.
