Socialist Cuba: visual propaganda and creation of revolutionary identity

Celem niniejszej pracy jest ukazanie pewnego aspektu kubańskiej ikonosfery, jakim jest muralizm polityczny na socjalistycznej Kubie. Zjawisko to zostało ujęte z perspektywy semiotycznej. Poszczególne murale poddano analizie interpretacyjnej, głęboko osadzonej w kulturowych kontekście. Praca ta jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie do jakich pojęć ucieka się propaganda wizualna w celu kształtowania rewolucyjnej tożsamości jednostki. Podkreśla wagę symboliki narodowej i religijnej w kształtowaniu nowej mitologii. Naświetla mechanizmy użyte w celu legitymizacji obecnego porządku społecznego i zapewnienia mu kontynuacji. Wskazuje na rolę obrazu w procesie przekierowania mentalności kapitalistycznej na socjalistyczną.

The focus of this paper is political mural painting as one of the aspects of Cuban landscape. The perspective assumed to examination is the perspective of semiotics. As such, the discussion offers interpretative analysis of representative murals in their cultural context. More precisely, it attempts to reveal notions that are used by visual propaganda in order to create the revolutionary identity. With reference thereto, the meaning of national and religious symbolism in formation of new mythology is emphasised. Similarly, the mechanisms employed to give legitimation of the current political order and to ensure its continuity are explained. Finally, the discussion points out the role of the image in the process of redirecting peoples mentality from capitalistic to socialist.
