The selected plays of William Butler Yeats in the light of ‘Wesele’ by Stanislaw Wyspianski

Celem mojej pracy jest próba spojrzenia na wybrane dramaty Williama Butlera Yeatsa przez pryzmat „Wesela” Stanisława Wyspiańskiego. Najpierw jednak czytelnik wprowadzony zostanie w specyfikę twórczości dramaturgicznej Yeatsa oraz Wyspiańskiego. Wskazane zostaną związki obu autorów z myślą Gordona Craiga oraz Yeatsa z teatrem japońskim nō. „Cathleen, córka Houlihana”, „Słowa na szybie okiennej”, „Czyściec”, „Sny kości” oraz „Przy źródle jastrzębia” to dramaty, które poddane zostaną analizie tematycznej. Treść „Wesela” Wyspiańskiego prześledzona zostanie w odniesieniu do zanalizowanych motywów z wybranych dramatów poetyckich Yeatsa. Praca zakończona zostanie spojrzeniem na kompozycję sztuk oraz wskazanie gatunków literackich, które stanowią architekstualną podstawę formalną dramatów Yeatsa i Wyspiańskiego.

An attempt of my paper is to look at the selected plays of William Butler Yeats in the light of ‘Wesele’ by Stanislaw Wyspianski. The reader will be familiarized with the specific characteristic of Yeats’s and Wyspianski’s dramatic writing. Some connections of both authors with Gordon Craig’s views on the theatrical spectacle and Yeats’s with Japanese theatre will be also presented. "Cathleen, the daughter of Houlihana", "Words upon the Window-Pane," "Purgatory," "The Dreaming of the Bones" and "At the Hawk’s Well" will be subjected to the thematic analysis. The content of ‘Wesele’ will be traced with reference to the previously analyzed themes from the selected poetic dramas of Yeats. Finally the attention will be paid to the composition of the selected plays and the indication of the literary genres, which constitute the architextual formal basis of Yeats’s dramas and Wyspianski’s ‘Wesele’.
