Powieść Joan Didion ,,Play It As It Lays" i jej polskie tłumaczenie autorstwa Anny Kołyszko: analiza porównawcza

Niniejsza praca przedstawia podobieństwa i różnice występujące między oryginalną wersją powieści ,,Play It As It Lays'' a jej polskim tłumaczeniem, ze zwróceniem szczególnej uwagi na techniki, które zostały zastosowane w polskim przekładzie powieści. Praca jest podzielona na trzy rozdziały. Pierwszy rozdział opisuje życie i twórczość Joan Didion oraz symbole występujące w powieści ,,Play It As It Lays'' i ich znaczenie, problem nihilizmu i jak został on przedstawiony w powieści amerykańskiej pisarki, a także życie w Hollywood i niespełniony ,,amerykański sen’”. Rozdział drugi przedstawia wybrane teoretyczne aspekty tłumaczenia (między innymi różne rodzaje ekwiwalencji, udomowienie i wyobcowanie, tłumaczenie dosłowne). W rozdziale tym omówiono także jeden z najtrudniejszych aspektów przekładu, a mianowicie techniki tłumaczenia wyrazów tabu. Rozdział drugi zawiera też uwagi na temat polifonii w tłumaczeniu prozy. Ostatni rozdział przedstawia podobieństwa i różnice występujące między anglojęzycznym oryginałem powieści a jej przekładem na język polski z uwzględnieniem takich zagadnień, jak przekład tytułu i głównych motywów, tłumaczenie wyrazów tabu, nazw własnych, symboli.

The thesis examines similarities and differences between the original version of the novel "Play It As It Lays" and its Polish translation "Graj jak się da", paying particular attention to the translation techniques applied by the Polish translator. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is focused on the life and works of Joan Didion, the symbols which are meaningful in Play It As It Lays, the problem of nihilism and how it is presented in the novel, the life in Hollywood and the unfulfilled American Dream. The second chapter concentrates on chosen theoretical aspects of translation (including various types of equivalence, domestication and foreignization, literal translation etc.). This part is also dedicated to one of the most difficult aspects of translation, which is the topic of how to render taboo words in translation. The second chapter includes the issue of polyphony in translation of prose, as well. The last chapter presents selected extracts from the novel "Play It As It Lays" and their Polish translation, similarities and differences between the English-language original and the Polish version of the novel are demonstrated, presenting e.g. how Anna Kołyszko rendered the title and the main motifs of the book, how she translated taboo words, proper names and symbols.
