Analysis of nature-related lexemes in the Polish translation of August Strindberg’s novel “Hemsöborna”

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza tłumaczenia leksyki związanej z naturą w powieści „Hemsöborna” autorstwa Augusta Strindberga. Badanie opiera się na porównaniu fragmentów oryginału z polskim przekładem dokonanym przez Felicję Popławską w celu ustalenia strategii tłumaczeniowej oraz odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy powieść wymaga współczesnego tłumaczenia. Pierwsza część pracy stanowi tło teoretyczne, które przedstawia konteksty oraz pojęcia wymagane do zrozumienia tematu pracy. Druga część składa się z analizy wybranych fragmentów powieści. Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała, że dominującą techniką tłumaczeniową leksyki związanej z naturą w powieści jest opuszczenie, co sprawia, że obraz natury w polskim przekładzie jest odmienny i uboższy w porównaniu z oryginałem szwedzkim.

The subject of this thesis is an analysis of the translation of nature-related lexemes in the novel “Hemsöborna” by August Strindberg. The study is based on a comparison of selected fragments from the original text and its Polish translation by Felicja Popławska in order to identify the translation strategy and to answer the question of whether the novel requires a contemporary Polish translation. The first part of the thesis provides the theoretical background, presenting the contexts and concepts necessary for understanding the topic. The second part consists of an analysis of selected fragments from the novel. The analysis demonstrated that omission is the most used translation technique for nature-related lexemes in the novel, which results in a different and less vivid depiction of nature in the Polish translation in comparison to the Swedish original.
