Long-term variability in winter snowiness in Krakow

Celem pracy było zbadanie tendencji zmian śnieżności zim w Krakowie w latach 1961/62-2010/11. W tym celu wykorzystano różne kryteria charakteryzujące występowanie pokrywy śnieżnej oraz stworzono nową klasyfikacje. Do analizy wykorzystano takie kryteria jak:-data pierwszej i ostatniej pokrywy śnieżnej, -długość okresu śnieżnego, -liczba dni z pokrywa śnieżną ≥ 1 cm i 20 cm, -maksymalną grubość pokrywy śnieżnej, -sumę grubości pokrywy śnieżnej, -współczynnik trwałości pokrywy śnieżnej. W analizie posłużono się danymi ze stacji naukowej Zakładu Klimatologii Instytutu Geografii i Gospodarki Przestrzennej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. W pierwszym etapie zanalizowano poszczególne charakterystyki pokrywy śnieżnej wykorzystując w tym celu m.in średnią arytmetyczną, odchylenie standardowe, współczynnik zmienności, trend zmian. Wyznaczono także skrajne przypadki i wartości anomalne. Sprawdzono również za pomocą współczynnika korelacji zależności pomiędzy poszczególnymi parametrami. W drugim etapie stworzono klasyfikacje na podstawie, której wyznaczono typy śnieżności zim. Każdą zimę z badanego wielolecia przypisano do odpowiedniego typu. Następnie porównano typy śnieżności według nowej klasyfikacji z typami śnieżności zim S. Paczosa (1982). Na podstawie nowej klasyfikacji określono tendencje zmian śnieżności zim w Krakowie. Stwierdzono, że zmiany zachodzące w charakterze śnieżności zim od lat 60. XX wieku nie wskazują wyraźnie, że zimy w Krakowie są coraz mniej śnieżne.

The aim of this study was to investigate the trends in Krakow winters snowiness during the following period of time 1961/62 to 2010/11 . Different criteria for characterizing the presence of snow cover were implemented and new classification was developed. In analysis, the following criteria were used:- date of the first and last snow cover- length of the snowiness period- number of days with snow cover was equal or higher than 1cm and 20 cm- a maximum thickness of snow cover- total thickness of snow cover - durability factor of snow coverThe analysis is based on the data from the research station of the Department of Climatology of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Management, Jagiellonian University. In the first part, the individual characteristics of snow cover were analyzed. The arithmetic mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, the trend changes were used. There were extreme cases and anomalous values designated. Correlation between variables was examined with the correlation coefficient. In the second part of analysis, winter classification was developed. It determined various types of winter snowity. Each winter was assigned to the appropriate type. Then, the snowity types were compared with the other winter classification according to S. Paczos (1982). On the basis of the new classification the trends of winter snowity in Krakow were developed. It was found that changes that have appeared in the nature of winters snowity since the sixties of the Twentieth century did not clearly indicate that winter in Krakow is less snowy.
