Jazz Age. The life nad culture of American society in the United States in the Nineteen-Twenties.

Lata dwudzieste XX wieku – Jazz Age - jeden z ważniejszych i bardziej interesujących momentów w historii Stanów Zjednoczonych. Okres niezwykłych przemian społeczno - gospodarczych, istotnych dla rodzącej się Nowej Ameryki.Celem niniejszej pracy jest omówienie najbardziej charakterystycznych zmian i przeobrażeń jakie dokonywały się w ówczesnych Stanach Zjednoczonych. Opisujące je autor stara się ukazać nie tylko wpływ, jaki wywarły one na dalszy rozwój państwa, ale również podkreślić ich dwuznaczny wymiar czy znaczenie. Praca składa się ze wstępu, czterech rozdziałów i zakończenia. Pierwszy z nich stanowi wprowadzenie do omawianej tematyki, będąc tym samym zarysem historycznym uwzględniającym najważniejsze wydarzenia analizowanego okresu.Rozdział drugi poświęcony został formującemu się nowemu gatunkowi muzycznemu jakim był jazz. Przedstawiono w nim także krótki opis trzech wielkich ośrodków jazzowych w Nowym Orleanie, Nowym Jorku oraz Chicago, charakterystykę intelektualnego ruchu zwanego Renesansem Harlemu oraz sylwetki czołowych muzyków jazzowych, czyli Louisa Armstronga, Joe „Kinga” Olivera, George’a Gershwina oraz „Duke’a” Ellingtona. Rozdział trzeci – Jazz a kultura - stanowi zasadniczą część pracy i jest analizą najbardziej charakterystycznych cech lat dwudziestych. Poruszane w nim zagadnienia obejmują przegląd mody, nowy styl bycia bogatej części społeczeństwa, zjawisko flapper girl, nowy status wyzwolonej kobiety, zmianę relacji rodzinnych, rozwój masowej kultury popularnej, czyli radia, prasy i kina oraz genezę i konsekwencje prohibicji.Ostatni rozdział jest natomiast próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie które określenie: lost generation czy też pleasure seakers, trafniej wyraża i definiuje pokolenie lat dwudziestych.

The NineteenTwenties - Jazz Age - one of the most important and most interesting moments in the history of the United States. The specific period of extraordinary social and economical changes which were relevant to the emerging of New America.The main aim of this dissertation is to discuss the most characteristic changes and transformations that took place in the United States at that time. By describing them the author tries not only to show the impact they had on the further development of the country, but also to emphasize their ambiguous meaning.The work consists of four chapters. The first one is the introduction to the subject, being thus the historical outline of the most important events of the analysed period.The second chapter is devoted to jazz as a new emerging musical genre. It presents a brief description of the three great jazz centres in New Orleans, New York and Chicago, the characteristics of the intellectual movement called the Harlem Renaissance as well as presents profiles of leading jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Joe "King" Oliver, George Gershwin and "Duke "Ellington.The third chapter - Jazz and culture – being the essential part of the work, is an analysis of the most characteristic features of the Twenties. Issues addressed in it include fashion, new lifestyle popular among the rich part of society, the phenomenon of a flapper girl, the new status of liberated woman, changes of family relationships, the development of mass popular culture, i.e. the radio, the press and the cinema as well as the origins and consequences of prohibition.The last chapter is an attempt to answer the question: which of the definitions: lost generation or pleasure seakers more accurately expresses and defines the generation of the Twenties.
