Legnica and Cheb. Comparative analysis of Romanesque residential complexes of the pfalz type

Niniejsza praca ma charakter komparatystyczny. Porównane w niej zostały dwa założenia rezydencjonalne w typie pfalz w Chebie oraz w Legnicy powstałe w XII i XIII wieku. Budowle te stanowią najciekawszy oraz najbardziej reprezentacyjny przykład tego typu architektury na terenie dzisiejszych Czech i Polski. Stanowią ważny przykład romańskiej architektury zamkowej średniowiecznej Europy. W pracy zostało zaprezentowane tło historyczne związane z ich powstaniem oraz wcześniejsza zabudowa terenu. Główną część pracy stanowi przedstawienie i porównanie wszystkich elementów wchodzących w skład obu założeń – budynki pałacowe (palatia), kaplice, obwody obronne i wieże.

This thesis adopts a comparative approach, focusing on two residential complexes of the pflaz type, located in Cheb and Legnica, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. These buildings represent some of the most significant and exemplary instances of this architectural from in the regions of modern-day Czech Republic and Poland. They stand as key examples of Romanesque castle architecture in Middle Age Europe. The study outlines the historical background of their development, along with an overview of the earlier structures on these sites. The main section of the paper is devoted to analyzing and comparing the key elements of both complexes, including the palace buildings (palatia), chapels, fortifications and towers.
