Patrick Bateman as a sigma male and his influence on sigma male phenomenon in social media

Niniejsza praca skupia się na analizie obrazu sigma male w mediach społecznościowych. Jej celem będzie zrekonstruowanie tego obrazu na podstawie różnych źródeł, zbadanie funkcji, jaką pełni to określenie w dyskursie internetowym, a także analiza jego znaczeń w oparciu o postać Patricka Batemana, głównego bohatera filmu „American Psycho” w reżyserii Mary Harron. Praca podzielona została na pięć rozdziałów. Pierwszy oraz drugi rozdział to rozdziały o charakterze teoretycznym. Ich treść skupia się na językowym oraz medialnym obrazie mężczyzny, a także na opisaniu zjawisk tożsamości, autoprezentacji i roli społecznej w przestrzeni medialnej. Trzeci rozdział ma charakter metodologiczny, zostały w nim opisane metody wykorzystane w analizie, czyli językowy obraz świata, stereotyp, konotacja, denotacja, medialny obraz świata i wpływ mediów. Rozdziały czwarty i piąty poświęcone zostały analizie określenia sigma male oraz jego cech, wpływ postaci Patricka Batemana na jego kreację, a także ustaleniu jego znaczeń na podstawie przykładów użycia w mediach społecznościowych. Analiza pozwoliła na wyodrębnienie kilku różnych znaczeń użycia wyrażenia oraz obraz, który jest za ich pomocą kreowany, co zostało opisane we wnioskach.

This thesis primarily concerns the analysis of the sigma male phenomenon in social media. The objective of the study is to reconstruct the image of sigma male using a variety of sources, as well as to examine its role in the online discourse and to analyze the various meanings behind sigma male, including those influenced by Patrick Bateman, the main character of American Psycho, a film directed by Mary Harron.The thesis has been divided into five chapters. The first two chapters are of a theoretical nature. This part describes the linguistic and media portrayal of men, as well as the representation of identity, self-presentation, and social roles in media. The third chapter is methodological in nature and presents the analytical methods used in the thesis, including linguistic image of the world, stereotype, connotation, denotation, media image of the world and the influence of media. Chapters four and five contain an analysis of the sigma male archetype and its characteristics, an investigation into the influence of Patrick Bateman on its creation and a review of sigma’s meanings, based on its usage in social media. The analysis demonstrates the variety of meanings and images that are created with this phrase, which was widely described and summarized in the final part of the thesis.
