Jewish neighbours : social ties as recalled by inhabitants os southern Poland

Pamięć relacji polsko-żydowskich należy do zestawu najbardziej intrygujących zagadnień socjologii i antropologii społecznej. W analizie skoncentruję się na zagadnieniu sąsiedztwa i pamięci zbiorowej. Odwołując się do wspomnień świadków zdarzeń sprzed II wojny światowej staram się wykazać, że zajmowanie wspólnego terytorium przez Polaków i Żydów wcale nie oznaczało generowania więzi sąsiedzkich tworzących wspólnotę. Bliskość przestrzenna, przy tak dużej obcości kulturowej, nie była wystarczającym warunkiem budującym zażyłość. Dowodzę, że między tymi grupami dominował typ sąsiedztwa ograniczonego, tolerującego (często w limitowanym zakresie) obcość, ale nie przekładającego się na solidarnościowe działanie. Polacy pamiętają, że Żydzi byli blisko, ale byli na tyle obcy, że nie pozwalało im to zawiązywać bliższych, konstruktywnych relacji sąsiedzkich. Bazując na wspomnieniach świadków wykazuję, że pamięć jednostkowych relacji jest lepiej oceniana niż pamięć wzajemnych relacji grupowych. Ta, często budowana w odwołaniu do stereotypów - pomimo pozytywnych doświadczeń z Żydem, bliskim sąsiadem - ugruntowała negatywny wizerunek Żydów jako grupy.

The memory of Polish and Jewish relationships is one of the most intriguing issues within sociology and social anthropology. The present study focuses on neighbour relationships and collective memory. Exploring memories of witnesses of the events predating the World War II, the author demonstrates that the cohabitation of Poles and Jews did not generate community-building ties. Due to Jews’ vast cultural alienation, the spatial proximity did not suffice for close relationships to flourish. These groups showed predominantly limited community bonds, marked by tolerance for otherness that did not translate into solidary actions. Poles remember that Jews were somewhere close but their otherness prevented them from having more intimate, constructive neighbour relationships. Based on witnesses’ memories, it is demonstrated that the memory of relationships between individuals is more positive than the memory of relationships between the two communities. Built upon stereotypes, the latter reinforced the negative image of Jews as a community despite positive experience with individual Jews, close neighbours.
