Stosowanie komplementarnych i alternatywnych terapii przeciwnowotworowych – przegląd piśmiennictwa 2008-2019
medycyna niekonwencjonalna, CAM, nowotwór, stosowanie
unconventional medicine, CAM, cancer, use
Introduction: Cancer is the second cause of death in the world and is responsible for the deaths of approximately 9.6 million people per year. From this cause, complementary and alternative medicine methods are gaining more and more interest, which can alleviate the side effects of conventional cancer therapies and lead to better physical, mental and emotional well-being.Aim: Analysis of causes and determinants of use of complementary and alternative medicine among oncological patients, as well as identification of the most popular methods, sources of information on CAM and the relationship between physicians and such practices.Material and method: Review of scientific literature from 2008-2019, collected by Polish and foreign databases. Results: The most common motives for using CAM are the reduction of pain of the disease and the possibility of active participation in the treatment process. The main source of information is the Internet, and the factors that have the greatest influence on the choice of such practices are female gender, higher education and age below 69 years. The most common methods are herbal supplements, vitamins and massages. There is a lack of conviction of physicians about unconventional medicine methods and patients' hesitation in disclosing information about their CAM use. Conclusions: The diagnosis of cancer is an impulse to introduce changes in the patient's life. Unconventional medicine can reduce the level of stress and gain a positive attitude to future life. However, using these practices without the knowledge and help of a doctor can have negative consequences and patients deciding to use them must be aware of the limitations of scientifically unscientific methods. The exclusion of standard therapies prevents the cure of cancer and is life-threatening, so the only effective way to use CAM is to integrate these two types of medicine safely.
