DEVILS, WITCHES AND SPECTRES:DEMONOLOGY IN MIKHAIL BULGAKOV’S MASTER AND MARGARITA ABSTRACT OF A B.A. THESIS IN ENGLISHThe thesis is devoted to the discussion of demonology in the novel of Mikhail Bulgakov entitled Master and Margarita. Devils are, apart from the main characters, the most important heroes of the book. At the very beginning of the novel, we meet Voland. He directs the actions of the remaining demons. Abaddon is another devil. In the novel, he takes care of a just distribution of losses among parties who fight against each other. Another devil who comes to Moscow with Voland is Azazello. In the novel, this demon is supposed to punish the sinners. In Master and Margarita, there is also a cat called Behemoth. In the novel, the cat plays the role of a jester. Korovyev-Fagot plays the same role.In Bulgakov’s novel, apart from devil, there are also witches. One of them is Voland’s servant, Hella. Margarita becomes another witch. Her servant, Natasha is the third witch. The further part of the study is devoted to the discussion on the role of fantasy in the novel. Its task is to expose the absurdities of Soviet reality. An important moment in the novel is the ball organized by Voland. Its participants pretend to be somebody else, but they show what they are like in reality. Bulgakov shows the essence of the system in which evil people pretend to be good. Devils in the novel do not want bad things to happen; they only show the true nature of people; they serve everybody with what they deserve and punish bad deeds. This is the paradox: the reality is so bad that only devils can fix it, even though they should be destroying it. Human forces are not able to do it. Bulgakov in the novel takes revenge for his fate – as he would have been unable to do in reality. The writer says that “manuscripts do not burn.” Margarita regains her lover and Master his manuscript. In the novel, hope directed towards the future wins. In the words expressed by the devil “Everything will turn out right, the world is built on that” Bulgakov’s faith in the victory of justice is confirmed once again.

DEMONOLOGIA W MISTRZU I MAŁGORZACIE MICHAIŁA BUŁHAKOWA STRESZCZENIE PRACY LICENCJACKIEJ W JĘZYKU POLSKIM W swojej pracy zajmuje się demonologią w powieści Michaiła Bułhakowa Mistrz i Małgorzata. Diabły są, oprócz tytułowych bohaterów najważniejszymi postaciami występującymi w Mistrzu i Małgorzacie. Na początku powieści poznajemy Wolanda. Kieruje on działaniami pozostałych demonów. Kolejnym diabłem jest Abaddon. W powieści troszczy się o sprawiedliwy rozkład strat wśród stron toczących ze sobą wojny. Kolejnym diabłem, który przybywa do Moskwy z Wolandem jest Asasello. Demon ten ma w powieści za zadanie karać grzeszników. W Mistrzu i Małgorzacie występuje także kot Behemot. Pełni on w powieści rolę błazna. Taką samą rolę pełni Korowiow-Fagot.W Mistrzu i Małgorzacie oprócz diabłów występują także wiedźmy. Jedną z nich jest służąca Wolanda – Hella. Drugą wiedźmą staje się Małgorzata. Trzecią wiedźmą jest jej służąca – Natasza.W dalszej części pracy omawiam rolę fantastyki w powieści. Zadaniem jej jest zdemaskowanie absurdów sowieckiej rzeczywistości. Ważnym momentem powieści jest bal u Wolanda. Jego uczestnicy nie udają kogoś kim nie są, lecz pokazują jacy są naprawdę. Bułhakow pokazuje istotę systemu, w którym źli ludzie udają porządnych. Diabły w powieści nie chcą zła, a tylko pokazują jacy ludzie są naprawdę, oddają każdemu to co mu się należy, karzą złe postępki. Pojawia się paradoks: rzeczywistość jest tak zła, że tylko diabeł może ją naprawić, chociaż powinien on ją psuć. Ludzkie siły nie są w stanie tego dokonać. Bułhakow bierze w powieści rewanż za swój los na który nie mógł sobie pozwolić w rzeczywistości. Pisarz mówi, że „rękopisy nie płoną”. Małgorzata odzyskuje ukochanego, a Mistrz swój rękopis. W powieści ostatecznie zwycięża skierowana w przyszłość nadzieja. W wypowiedzianych przez diabła słowach „wszystko będzie, jak być powinno, tak już jest urządzony świat” jeszcze raz potwierdza się wiara Bułhakowa w zwycięstwo sprawiedliwości.
