Passion as a destructive force. Analysis of the correspondence between Maria Dabrowska and Anna Kowalska in 1946-1948.

Temat mojej pracy to ,,Namiętność jako siła niszcząca, czyli analiza relacji Anny Kowalskiej i Marii Dąbrowskiej na podstawie listów i dzienników''. Zachowane teksty to zbiór około 4000 listów. Korzystałam z rękopisów, które znajdują się w Muzeum Literatury w Warszawie. Szczególną uwagę zwracam na lata 1946–1948. Był to najtrudniejszy czas ich tajnego związku z jego najbardziej dramatycznymi momentami: ciążą Anny, która była trudna do zaakceptowania przez Dąbrowską, narodziny dziecka i okres tuż po śmierci Jerzego Kowalskiego i Stanisława Stempowskiego, którzy byli partnerami poetek. Tym wydarzeniom towarzyszył ton korespondencji, który czasem przypominał pole bitwy, a następnie ostrożne negocjacje pokojowe i kompromisy. Oprócz tego tematu rozwijam również rozszerzoną biografię poetek i nawiązuję do ogólnej historii listów i kobiecych autobiografii. W analizie tematu wykorzystuję teorię feministyczne i psychologiczne, które pozwalają na jeszcze głębsze zrozumienie tematu. Emocjonalny rollercoaster, przepiękne miłosne wyznania, które towarzyszyły poetkom w tym trudnym dla nich czasie oraz opisy realiów XIX wieku, sprawiają, że czytelnik bardzo szybko zostanie pochłonięty tą niezwykłą historią.

The topic of this paper is the analysis of relationship between Anna Kowalska and Maria Dąbrowska based on their correspondence and diaries'. The number of preserved texts comes up to about 4000 letters. I used the manuscripts belonging to the Museum of Literature in Warsaw. In this work, I pay close attention to the years 1945-1948 as it was the most challenging time of their secret relationship which included its most dramatic moments: pregnancy of Anna, which was hard to accept by Dąbrowska, birth of the child (Maria-Tulcia) and the period shortly after the death of Jerzy Kowalski and Stanisław Stempowski, who were the poets’ partners. All of those events were accompanied by the women’s intense and emotional correspondence, which shows how much of a struggle their love was. The tone of their letters sometimes resembled a battlefield, and then careful peace negotiations and compromises. Additionally, I will also create an expanded biography of the poets as well as refer to the general history of letters and women's autobiographies. In my analysis, I will be using feminist and psychological theories that allow for an even deeper understanding of the topic. Emotional rollercoaster, beautiful love confessions that accompanied the poets in this difficult time for them and descriptions of the realities of the 19th century make the reader very quickly become absorbed in this extraordinary story.
