Analiza porównawcza narracji w powieści "To the Lighthouse" Virginii Woolf oraz w polskim tłumaczeniu Krzysztofa Klingera "Do Latarni Morskiej" pod kątem reprezentacji mowy pozornie zależnej i perspektywy

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przeprowadzenie analizy porównawczej powieści Virginii Woolf “To the Lighthouse” (1927) i jej jedynego dotychczas polskiego tłumaczenia, “Do Latarni Morskiej” (1962), autorstwa Krzysztofa Klingera. Virginia Woolf należała do wybitnych przedstawicieli literatury i każdy kraj Europy powinien posiadać właściwie zrealizowane tłumaczenia jej najważniejszych dzieł, w tym “To the Lighthouse”. Niestety, polskie tłumaczenie pod różnymi względami pozostawia wiele do życzenia. “To the Lighthouse” jest jedną z powieści strumienia świadomości napisanych przez Woolf, a główną zastosowaną w niej techniką literacką jest modernistyczna technika mowy pozornie zależnej. Umożliwia ona czytelnikowi niejako ‘wejście’ w głowę bohatera i – zapośredniczone przez narratora – doświadczanie świata przedstawionego powieści z jego perspektywy. “To the Lighthouse” jest przez to bardzo eksperymentalną powieścią jeśli chodzi o formę, zrywa bowiem z tradycyjnymi sposobami budowania narracji. Dzięki takiemu a nie innemu sposobowi prezentacji perspektyw poszczególnych bohaterów jest też wysoce subiektywna. Jednakże, zarówno realizacja mowy pozornie zależnej jak i prezentacja perspektywy zostały znacznie zmienione w tłumaczeniu, z tendencją do upraszczania i konwencjonalizowania oryginału. Aspekty te są szczegółowo przeanalizowane w trzecim rozdziale niniejszej rozprawy, na podstawie porównania wybranych fragmentów “To the Lighthouse” oraz jej polskiego tłumaczenia. Teoretyczną podbudowę pod analizę przygotowują dwa pierwsze rozdziały, które są poświęcone osobie autorki (jej biografii, stylowi literackiemu, oraz recepcji na arenie międzynarodowe) oraz rozważaniom na temat takich zagadnień jak narracja, perspektywa, czy tłumaczenia literackie.

The present thesis sets out to conduct a comparative analysis of Virginia Woolf’s novel “To the Lighthouse” (1927) and its so far the only Polish translation, “Do Latarni Morskiej” (1962) by Krzysztof Klinger. Virginia Woolf was an exceptional literary figure, and so in every country in Europe there should be proper translations of her most important works, including “To the Lighthouse”. Unfortunately, in many aspects the Polish translation leaves much to be desired. “To the Lighthouse’” is one of Woolf’s stream-of-consciousness novels, and the main literary technique employed there is the modernist technique of free indirect speech (FIS). It enables the reader to ‘enter’ the character’s head, and experience the diegetic world of the novel through their perspective mediated by the narrator. “To the Lighthouse” is therefore highly experimental in form, breaking with traditional modes of narrative. Such a way of presenting perspectives of particular characters makes it also highly subjective. However, both the realisation of FIS and the presentation of perspective have been considerably changed in the translation, with a tendency to simplify and conventionalise the original text. These aspects are analysed in detail in the third chapter of the thesis at hand, basing on the selected excerpts from “To the Lighthouse” and from its Polish translation. The basis for the analysis is provided by the first two chapters, which are concerned with the figure of the author (her biography, literary style, and international reception) as well as theoretical reflections on such concepts as narrative, perspective, or literary translation.
