Image, text and their mutual relations on the example of the works of Wojciech Jagielski and Krzysztof Miller

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest Obraz, tekst i ich wzajemne relacje na przykładzie twórczości Wojciecha Jagielskiego oraz Krzysztofa Millera. Podstawę przeprowadzonych do niej badań stanowią pisemne reportaże Dobre miejsce do umierania oraz Modlitwa o deszcz Wojciecha Jagielskiego, oraz zawarte w wymienionych książkach zdjęcia polskiego fotoreportera, Krzysztofa Millera. Jej celem było znalezienie odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, jakie relacje między tekstem a obrazem są wykorzystywane przez nadawcę, by przekazać odbiorcy konkretną treść. Pierwsze dwa rozdziały posłużyły uporządkowaniu pola terminologicznego i zawierały definicję tekstu oraz obrazu, ze szczególnym wyróżnieniem reportażu oraz fotografii. Następnie zostały przedstawione narzędzia badawcze, za pomocą których została dokonana analiza obu nośników. Została w niej wykorzystana teoria lingwistyki kognitywnej, w związku z czym wprowadzono pojęcia schematów wyobrażeniowych, metonimii, metafor oraz ram interpretacyjnych. Wskazane struktury posłużyły za narzędzia do analizy materiału językowego i fotograficznego, przeprowadzanej kolejno w rozdziale czwartym i piątym. Ostatnia część pracy stanowiła opis relacji między tekstem a obrazem.Rozprawa wykazała, że dobór fotografii do tekstu reportażu nie był przypadkowy, oraz że recepcja zdjęcia wpływa na rozumienie fragmentu reportażu i powoduje jego reinterpretację. Tak skonstruowany komunikat, a zatem spójne treściowo połączenie zdjęć i tekstu, skutkuje wzajemnym uzupełnianiem się sensów i tworzy przekaz multimodalny.

The subject of this work is Image, text and their mutual relations on the example of the works of Wojciech Jagielski and Krzysztof Miller. The basis of the research are reportages titled Dobre miejsce do umierania and Modlitwa o deszcz written by Wojciech Jagielski, as well as photographs of the Polish photojournalist, Krzysztof Miller contained in the mentioned books. Its purpose was to find the answer to the question about what relationships between text and image are used by the sender to convey specific content to the recipient.The first two chapters were used to organize the terminological field and contained the definition of text and image, with particular emphasis on reportage and photography. Then, research tools were presented, with the help of which both media were analyzed. The theory of cognitive linguistics was used in it, and therefore the concepts of image schemas, metonymy, metaphors and semantic frames were introduced. The indicated structures served as tools for analyzing linguistic and photographic material, carried out in chapters four and five respectively. The last part of the work was a description of the relationship between text and image.The dissertation showed that the selection of photographs for the text of the reportage was not accidental, and that the reception of the photographs influences the understanding of a fragment of the reportage and causes its reinterpretation. A message constructed in this way, and thus a coherent combination of photos and text, results in mutual complementation of meanings and creates a multimodal message.
